Overview

McDATA Intrepid and Sphereon families of Fibre Channel Director and Switch Fabric offerings, resold by IBM, now offer the 1U Rack Mount Management Server optional feature.

The 1U Rack Mount Management Server feature may be configured in existing cabinets qualified for use with McDATA Intrepid and Sphereon families and is designed to replace the laptop-based Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Management (EFCM) Server/Service Processor (#3755).

The 1U Rack Mount Management Server (#3765):

Provides EFCM server functionality (call home, event logging, read-write removable media)

Provides additional processing capabilities and server robustness, compared to the laptop-based EFCM Server, to support advanced management applications targeted in the 2003 timeframe and beyond

Transition from laptop-based EFCM service processor to 1U Rack Mount Management Server is designed to provide these benefits:

Increased processing power and memory options for advanced management applications

Reduced complexity by replacing external modem and external zip drive with an integrated international modem and a CD-RW drive

Improved server designed robustness, helping to support fewer and more efficient service calls

Reduced cabinet mechanical complexity as a result of the 1U rack mount design

Description

McDATA Intrepid Director (2032-140/064) and McDATA Sphereon Fabric Switch (2031-232/224) 1U Rack Mount Management Server (#3765):

McDATA Intrepid 6140 Director (2032-140)

McDATA Intrepid 6064 Director (2032-064)

McDATA Sphereon 3232 Fabric Switch (2031-232)

McDATA Sphereon 4500 Fabric Switch (2031-224)

The 1U Server will not ship with a monitor or keyboard. Instead, it will support a Virtual Network Computing (VNC) application, which may be quickly downloaded (228 KB) on-site to a laptop.

Because VNC is such a small application, it may be retained on the CE laptop to be used when needed. McDATA will supply a direct connect cable to accommodate sites not supporting attachment via private LAN. When a private LAN is available, maintenance activities may be accomplished through client connection from CE laptop to 1U Server via an available port on the Ethernet hub.

The McDATA 1U Rack Mount Management Server may be installed into the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet (2032-C40) using the no-cost feature numbers (3766 and 3767) to designate factory or field installation.

Notes

EFCM 7.1 is designed for existing customers with laptop-based EFCM service processors.

EFCM 7.2 is designed for customers utilizing the new 1U Rack Mount Management Server, which comes with Windows 2000 installed, an internal international modem, and a CD-RW drive.

EFCM 7.2 should not be installed on laptop-based EFCM service processors.
