IRVING, Texas, Aug. 21 -- NEC Unified Solutions, Inc. (NEC), a leader in converged communications solutions for the enterprise and small and medium-sized businesses (SMB), today announced the availability of its Managed IP Telephony (MIPT) service. Designed for the SMB market, MIPT delivers feature-rich, fully customizable IP telephony as a service managed to a service level agreement (SLA), combining a UNIVERGE(R) IP Telephony platform and presence-enabled applications with professional, maintenance and management services for a predictable monthly charge.

Placing a customized design of managed equipment on customer facilities with no upfront charges, MIPT provides an ideal balance between a purchased solution and a hosted IP Telephony solution. It combines the flexibility and feature-rich applications suite of a purchased system with the expert management, technology refresh and predictable costs of a hosted solution, allowing customers to dedicate their scarce technical resources and capital funds to strategic core business initiatives.

In addition to an onsite UNIVERGE IP Telephony platform with converged applications, the MIPT offering includes a complete suite of professional, maintenance and managed services, carrier services, a single point-of-contact for provisioning and problem resolution, ongoing performance trend analysis and real-time reports via a secure web portal. NEC may provide management for both voice and networking equipment, or at the customer's option, the customer and NEC may co-manage the IPT domain.

The MIPT service is available with Essential and Comprehensive options. Both options include a fully managed IP communications platform, but they differ in the level of support for the customer's IP network (routers and layer 2/3 switches):

-- Essential Managed IP Telephony Service -- provides complete management of IP Telephony infrastructure and applications, as well as monitoring and incident management of the supporting data infrastructure.

-- 24x7 monitoring of IP Telephony and data network for availability and performance
-- Incident management of IP Telephony and data network
-- Off-site configuration backup of IP Telephony infrastructure and applications
-- Change Management for IP Telephony platform and applications
-- Web portal access to real-time information about the customer's network and on-demand historical reports
-- Service Level Agreement defining objectives for system availability, IPT quality-of-service and mean time to problem resolution

-- Comprehensive Managed IP Telephony Service -- Complete management of both IP Telephony infrastructure and supporting data network with respect to availability, performance, configuration changes, software updates and service level agreements. Includes Essential Managed IP Telephony Service offerings and adds:

-- Change Management for routers and switches
-- Trend Analysis for IP Telephony and supporting data network
-- Dedicated Customer Service Manager assigned to customer
