Maintenance Technologies Exhibits Adaptive Control & Monitoring Technology For CNC Machine Tools In Booth A-8218 at IMTS 2006

Chicago, IL, September 6, 2006 - Maintenance Technologies demonstrates their Adaptive Control & Monitoring (ACM) technology for CNC machine tools in Booth A-8218 at IMTS 2006. Maintenance Technologies is the North American distributor of OMATIVE System's ACM solution which helps manufacturers cut cycle times, reduce downtime, and minimize part cost by reacting to actual metalcutting conditions in real time.

"CNC programs set feed rates based on the programmer's best guess regarding spindle loads," explained James Dallam, Maintenance Technologies Product Manager. "But, real-world conditions are highly variable because workpieces aren't uniform, tools get dull, coolant qualities change, fixtures are unstable, and many other factors.

"ACM technology monitors spindle load in real time and adjusts the feed rate on the fly based on cutting tool and workpiece data to achieve optimum productivity. The programmer still controls the process by setting upper and lower limits for feed and speed, but ACM technology delivers an optimum process within those limits every time."

ACM technology can be applied to virtually any CNC metalcutting machine tool, including machining centers, turning centers, grinders, deep hole drills, and gun drilling machines. It is available as a fully-integrated option on Siemens Sinumerik, Fanuc, Heidenhain-iTNC, and Fidia X-Power CNCs. It is also available as a stand-alone add-on for virtually any CNC for which an integrated version is not available.

"The data collected by ACM technology can also be used for other purposes, including tool condition monitoring, tool breakage detection, tool overload protection, and dynamic tool protection upon impact and during cutting.

These capabilities extend tool life, while protecting both the machine and tooling from catastrophic damage" Dallam added.

"The combination of cycle optimization and reduced downtime leads to impressive productivity gains," Dallam said. "We have case studies in which ACM has reduced overall cutting time by as much as 40-percent with no other modification to the machine, tooling, or process."
