LSI Achieves Unprecedented Performance with SAS Solution for Enterprise Applications

LSI demonstrates groundbreaking SQLIO benchmarks for sequential and random reads and writes at IDF

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 26/-- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE:LSI) today announced a demonstration of a SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) solution delivering SQLIO benchmarks of greater than 3.2 GB/s throughput. This demonstration allows end users to realize the performance, scalability and quality delivered by SAS storage products to meet the enterprise application requirements of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and the coming Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. The demonstration will take place September 26-28 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco in booth #321 of the Intel IHV Optimization Community.

This groundbreaking demonstration features the LSI silicon-to systems SAS product portfolio including host bus adapters, MegaRAID® adapters, expanders, switches, and storage systems in tandem with the Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® 5100 series processors. Featuring a PCI Express bus, the SAS solution has achieved 64KB sequential reads of 3.2 GB/s with 64KB sequential writes of 2.7 GB/s. In addition, the solution will demonstrate 256KB random read of 2.0 GB/s with 256KB random writes of 2.1 GB/s.

"Large numbers of servers are being deployed this year using SAS, in large part due to the unprecedented performance and scalability that can be effectively packaged with demanding Business Intelligence applications, such as SQL Server 2005," said Harry Mason, president, SCSI Trade Association, and director of industry marketing, Storage Components Group, LSI Logic. "Throughput is often the bottleneck in these applications and SAS, coupled with the enhanced capabilities of PCI Express, dissolves these performance barriers."

SQLIO is a tool provided by Microsoft to determine the Input/Output capacity of a disk subsystem and ensure the system is tuned for optimal performance. SQLIO is designed to simulate aspects of the I/O workload of Microsoft SQL Server allowing end users to use SQLIO to measure maximum I/O throughput, summarize certain performance data during the test run and identify performance issues before actual SQL Server deployment.

"This week's demonstration is exciting news for the end user community," said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing, Intel Corporation. "With this SAS configuration featuring a PCI Express interface on the Intel® Dual- Core Xeon® platform, we have eliminated the bottleneck found in parallel PCI solutions and demonstrated the true potential that SAS holds for enterprise applications such as SQL Server data warehouses."

LSI Logic is the industry's leading provider of SAS technology with an unmatched product portfolio that addresses every level of the infrastructure. LSI SAS component technology enables more than 100 new server models, all based on the recently announced high-performance, Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® platform.
