Low-Dropout Regulator has 3.0 A continuous output current.

Press Release Summary:

With 0.9 V output voltage capability, MIC49300 dual supply LDO responds instantly to abrupt changes in load current. Main supply requires 400 mV headroom to maintain proper regulation, while second supply provides bias voltage to control circuit. Housed in S-Pak 5-lead package, product offers gain bandwidth of up to 10 MHz and supports input voltage as low as 1.4 V. Other features include thermal shutdown, current limit protection, and uCap stability.

Ultra-Fast 3A Low-Dropout Regulator Powers Low-Voltage Processor Cores Down to 0.9V

o Ideal for powering high speed, low-voltage DSPs, microcontrollers, digital logic

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- (August 18, 2003) - Extending the popular family of ultra-low output voltage, high-current low-dropout regulators (LDOs) that provide a well-regulated supply for next-generation processor cores, the MIC49300 is now available from Micrel Semiconductor (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in power management and high-speed communication ICs.

With its 3.0A output current and 0.9V output voltage capability, the MIC49300 is a dual supply LDO that responds instantly to any abrupt change in load current. The main supply to the device requires only 400mV headroom, or dropout voltage, under worst case conditions to maintain proper regulation, while a second, higher supply provides bias voltage to the control circuit.

The MIC49300 supports an input voltage as low as 1.4V, allowing for high efficiency conversion from low-voltage, high-current power rails. Other MIC49300 features include thermal shutdown, current limit protection and uCap stability -- the ability to use ceramic output capacitors. As a uCap regulator, the MIC49300 only requires a 1uF ceramic output capacitor for stability and is highly tolerant of any capacitance used on its output.

"In addition to its high current, low voltage capabilities, the MIC49300 features a gain bandwidth of up to 10MHz, enabling ultra-fast transient response. This allows the device to respond quickly to fast dynamic load changes in PC graphics card, communication and networking applications," said Steve Knoth, Product Marketing Manager for the LDO Products. "The MIC49300 provides a simple, low-cost, efficient, and yet high current-capable, solution."

Available in Micrel's new high-performance S-Pak 5-lead package, the MIC49300 is priced at $2.60 when purchased in a quantity of 1,000. Samples are available now, and production quantities are stock to 8 weeks ARO.
