Quad Micro Works Announces Second-Generation Personal Server Appliance

LOS ANGELES, May 24 - Network appliance vendor Quad Micro Works today announced it would release the second generation of its Square One® Personal Server by the end of the quarter. The new version, built on an advanced ARM9-based system-on-chip from StorLink Semiconductors, Inc., will for the first time include models with an integrated 802.11g wireless access point, in addition to the 4-port router carried over from the previous generation. The new combination will eliminate the need for a separate wireless router for most customers, simplifying network configuration while providing the powerful storage and server functionality the compact, Linux-based appliance is known for.

Other new hardware features of the upcoming Square One models include: Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN interfaces; storage expansion through three USB ports and one eSATA port; and double the memory and CPU speed of the previous generation, significantly boosting performance for database-driven Web applications. Square One's internal hard drive now uses a SATA interface, and capacities have been increased to 500 Gb and 320 Gb. In addition, driveless models are planned for those customers who desire the increased flexibility of supplying their own hard drives.

"These new models," said Jae Yang, Technology VP at QMW, "will entrench Square One's position as the premier server appliance for small business and home customers. Our goal is to make Square One the unquestioned features and performance leader in this space."

Download Station

The next-generation Square One servers will ship with more software services and applications pre-installed. New services include Secure FTP, WebDAV, Qmail, and VPN. Building on a fully updated Apache/PHP/MySQL Web platform, the added services will provide customers with more secure remote access as well as the ability to run their own mail server, should they need it.

On the applications side, Square One will now feature a bittorrent client for convenient, 24/7 downloading from the leading peer-to-peer network, and will be the first shipping network storage device to include the Casgle Broadcatcher client, which interfaces with Casgle LLC's just-announced multimedia download service. Square One customers will enjoy unlimited free access to the new service and be able to choose from over one hundred video and audio "channels", including content from such providers as CNN, MTV, National Geographic, and many more. Square One will automatically download new content in subscribed channels as it becomes available; when a clip has finished downloading, users can access it easily through Casgle's browser-based interface.
