Linear Position Sensor uses magnetoinductive technology.

Press Release Summary:

BIL analog absolute linear position sensor allows existing motion control systems to be upgraded from end-of-stroke to continuous position feedback. Non-contact unit fits into tight places. Pure-analog output provides infinite resolution with linearity and repeatability of less than ±1% of FS. Available in 95 and 230 mm lengths, linearized measuring lengths are 50 and 160 mm, respectively.

Balluff Introduces Breakthrough Non-Contact, Analog, Linear Position Sensor

FLORENCE, KY, June 2004 - Balluff will demonstrate a new type of analog absolute linear position sensor at IMTS that uses proprietary, cost-effective magnetoinductive technology to provide accurate, absolute position feedback. Mini proportioned and optimized for precision positioning at shorter displacements, the new BIL allows existing motion control systems to be affordably upgraded from end-of-stroke to the flexibility of continuous position feedback. The non-contact BIL is a cost-effective upgrade to conventional sensing devices on virtually any short displacement motion system. It is an ideal replacement for limit switches, potentiometers and optical sensors for controlling depth of cut, cut-off length, and workpiece position in a variety of metalworking applications.

Available in 95 mm and 230 mm lengths, the BIL fits into tight places other linear position feedback devices can't. Its pure-analog output provides theoretically infinite resolution (noise limited), with linearity of <±1% of full scale and repeatability of <±0.1% of full scale. Linearized measuring lengths for the two sizes are 50 mm and 160 mm respectively. Voltage and current-output versions are available.

Balluff magnetoinductive technology works through the interaction between a magnet - attached to the moving machine part - and a specially shaped triangular coil. The BIL is durable and robust, with no moving parts other than the magnet. Its sensor head and processing elements are sealed to IP 67 standard, providing high resistance to shock, vibration, moisture, and common contaminants.
