Linear Position Encoder handles tough operating conditions.

Press Release Summary:

Ultra Magnescale SR33 offers postitional accuracy of ±3 µm. Magnetic coating maintains film thickness variation to less than 1 µm and reduces signal period from 200 µm down to 40 µm. Use of magnetic resonance head offering compensation pattern and automatic gain control allows stable, high output signal to be generated. Users can select from Analog 1 Vp-p signal with 40 µm pitch or A/B Quadrature signal, with resolutions of 0.05 µm, 0.1 µm, or 0.5 µm.

New SR33 Ultra Magnescale from Sony Provides Enhanced Accurary

Linear Encoder with Magnetic Coating Technology Provides High Reliability Under Tough Operating Conditions

National Manufacturing Week - Booth 5553 Chicago IL, March 3, 2003 -Sony Precision Technology, Inc., the global leader in instrumentation, measurement devices, and machine tool products will be showcasing the new SR33 Ultra Magnescale in the Sony Booth during National Manufacturing Week March 3 - 6, 2003 in Chicago, Illinois.

"Because of its resistance to the typical shop environment, the Magnescale Linear Position Encoder technology is in high demand for replacement of optical technology. However, we needed to focus on providing a Magnescale system with better accuracy," stated Tim Maxwell, Director of the Sony Measurement Devices Sales Group.

Maxwell further stated, "We developed a new coating material jointly with a Sony division working on high-density tape applications. By adapting the tape coating technology to
our encoders, we have been able to reduce the signal period from 200µm down to 40µm." With lower interpolation error, the Ultra Magnescale is capable of positional accuracy of ±3µm. And, the system maintains all of the same reliability that the Magnescale is best known for.

The new magnetic coating technology will maintain the film thickness variation to less than 1 µm and the mechanical guide technology will keep the clearance between the magnetic surface and the head to a precise distance. The use of a magnetic resonance head offering a newly designed compensation pattern and automatic gain control also allows a stable, high output signal to be generated.

By providing several signal output options, Sony has made it easy to interface the Ultra Magnescale with most control systems. Users can select from an Analog 1Vp-p signal with a 40µm pitch or an A/B Quadrature signal, with available resolutions of 0.05µm, 0.1µm, or 0.5µm. In addition, users can select either a single reference marker to be placed anywhere along the travel of the scale, a periodic reference marker, or distance coded reference marks. And, with an overall footprint nearly identical to optical linear scales, the Ultra Magnescale, in many cases, will be an easy drop-in replacement.
