Linear Ceramic Actuators feature vacuum compatible design.

Press Release Summary:

With no lubricants, millisecond responsiveness, and non-magnetic design, Ceramic Piezo Motors and Nanopositioning Actuators replace classical actuator and motion control components in precision motion control applications. For travel ranges less than 1 mm, PiezoMove® flexure actuators are recommended. PILine® ultrasonic stepping actuators provide speeds to 800 mm/sec, while NEXACT® and NEXLINE® piezo stepping actuators offer position resolution to 30 picometers.

Original Press Release:

Ceramic Replacement Actuators are Non-Magnetic, Vacuum Compatible, Fast

PI's new line of compact ceramic piezo motors & nanopositioning actuators replaces classical actuators & motion control components in precision motion control applications such as found in the semiconductor, photonics and nano-biotechnology. High-speed motors, high force actuators and zero-wear flexure designs are available.

Advantages: no lubricants, vacuum compatible, millisecond responsiveness, non-magnetic,

Applications: precision motion control in optics & imaging applications,
fast valve control, high-energy physics / high magnetic fields, vacuum applications, precision liquid dispensing, scanning microscopy, OCT, MRI.

Three Different Designs, one for Every Application
PI offers three advanced types of ceramic, non-magnetic linear motor actuators. The three types are distinguished by force, travel range, and speed and precision. For short travel ranges (<1 mm), high forces and very rapid response (sub-millisecond feasible) the PiezoMove® type flexure actuators are recommended. Basically unlimited travel ranges are provided by both the ultrasonic motor actuators (PILine®) and piezo stepping linear motor type actuators (NEXACT® & NEXLINE®). While the faster ultrasonic motor actuators provide speeds to 800 mm/sec (32 in/sec), the piezo stepping motor types feature higher resolution and force.

Basic features of the linear motor actuator designs:
o Non-magnetic, bakeable to 150C, and vacuum-compatible
o Self-locking at rest, basically unlimited linear travel
o Stiff construction, millisecond responsiveness & high bandwidth
o Very compact (from 8x6x2 mm) and cost-effective
o Forces to 500 N (50 kg) (stepping type)
o Speed to 800 mm/sec (ultrasonic type)
o Position resolution to 30 picometers (stepping type)

Self-Locking, No Wear, Maintenance-Free, No Lubricants
In contrast to servo or stepper motor actuators, the piezo ceramic linear motors effect linear motion directly, without the need to transform rotation with gears and leadscrews. Backlash and wear are eliminated and the drive is maintenance-free. Piezo ceramic actuators exhibit high stiffness and are self-locking when powered down with nanometer position stability, and zero heat dissipation or servo-dither at rest.

Controllers & Software
A variety of controllers ranging from OEM boards to rack mount systems and extensive software support is available to precisely control and automate the actuators.
