New Low Light Uniform Source System Matches the Level of Light from a Single Star

NORTH SUTTON, NH - Labsphere, Inc. announces the USS-1200V-LL "Starlight" Uniform Source System for calibrating extremely low light level imaging devices and systems. The new Starlight Uniform Source System is specifically designed to provide spectral irradiance levels comparable to those of a single star shining on the Earth's surface, featuring a luminance range of 0.0001 - 100 cd/m². This is necessary for the calibration and test of such equipment as night vision systems, aircraft displays, and low light level targeting systems.

The Starlight System features a satellite sphere illuminator with an external halogen light source and a motorized variable attenuator for precise control of illumination levels. Light from the satellite sphere enters the main sphere by passing through a two-part filter system: a bandpass filter-wheel permits selection of a specific spectral channel, while a neutral-density filter determines the system's irradiance range.

The system can be operated directly, from front-panel controls, or through Labsphere's standard Uniform Source System software. This software permits remote control of the lamp power supply, variable attenuator, and optional detector multiplexer. It also automatically corrects detector readings using programmable calibration factors, displaying the readings in both graphic and numeric format.

The Starlight System includes a 12" diameter integrating sphere with a 4" diameter exit port. The sphere is coated with Labsphere Spectraflect, providing an irradiance uniformity of greater than 98%.
