Original Press Release:

Specialty Lift for Transformer Coil Maintenance

(Niagara Falls, NY November 26, 2003) Historically, transformer coils were wound in a horizontal position. Today, winding takes place vertically, presenting a challenge to workers who must maintain the 20 foot high coils. The solution is to install the lift system in a pit. As the coil is wound it is lowered, which allows the worker to remain at floor level. The vertical winding of the copper wire continues uninterrupted as the lift adjusts to the height of the coil.

The lift features a unique open-center platform where the diameter of the opening increases with the size of the coil as the copper is wound. This 20,000 pound capacity lift smoothly moves and holds the massive copper coils due to its self-locking, electro-mechanical drive. In addition to the design and manufacture of the lift, Handling Specialty was also responsible for interfacing the winding equipment to system controls.
