Cooper Crouse-Hinds Announces EV LED Lighting Technology

New lighting product provides superior energy efficiency and product life

SYRACUSE, N.Y., March 9, 2009 -Cooper Crouse-Hinds is leading the way in LED lighting technology for industrial and hazardous locations, most recently with the introduction of its EV LED luminaire. The EV LED is the industry's first bright white, Class I, Division 1 factory-sealed LED luminaire for general illumination. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are solid-state semi-conductor devices that convert nearly all the electrical energy directly into visible light.

Expected operating life on an LED typically ranges from 50,000 hours to more than 100,000 hours. This is a significant upgrade over traditional light sources, whether incandescent, fluorescent, or HID lamps. Three key factors - luminaire design, junction temperature, and ambient operating temperature affect the actual life span. In all three cases, heat management is the primary consideration, as the efficiency of heat removal from the LED has direct impact on its longevity. Thoughtful luminaire design is essential, and this consideration is a priority in all Cooper Crouse-Hinds LED luminaires.

Another major advantage of LED lighting is high efficiency from the light source. LEDs offer better lumen maintenance and optical efficiency, which leads to greater energy efficiency. Additionally, LED lighting has an advantage over conventional light sources because it dramatically reduces the overall cost of ownership. Other types of lighting have high maintenance costs associated with frequent replacement of incandescent, fluorescent or other lamps-this is virtually eliminated with the installation of LED luminaires.

"The introduction of the EV LED Series is an integral part of our company-wide plan to broaden customer solutions and drive innovation," said Michael Neary, Product Line Manager of LED Lighting, Cooper Crouse-Hinds. "This product continues the tradition of quality and innovation that our customers have come to expect from Cooper Crouse-Hinds."

The EV LED was built to perform effectively and economically in areas that might be difficult to service, expensive to shut down or at any location that requires an increased degree of safety. The EV LED provides enhanced safety with instant illumination and restrike, crisp white light, cold temperature operation and a "no-lights-out" feature. This feature is designed for continuous light output, even if a single LED fails.

"The circuit is designed to provide enough usable light to the remaining LEDs in case of failure," Neary continued. "This provides additional safety, as well as avoids unscheduled maintenance and possible OSHA fines."

EV LED lighting by Cooper Crouse-Hinds is the next step in its commitment to ESP (Enhancing Safety & Productivity). The goal behind ESP is to develop smarter, more powerful solutions that enhance safety and productivity. This promise is what drives Cooper Crouse-Hinds to continually develop products that anticipate customer needs and that work to achieve the goal of eventually making danger in the workplace obsolete.
