Leadis Technology Announces New LED Driver Product Line
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 30 -- Leadis Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:LDIS), a leading mixed-signal semiconductor developer of color display driver ICs for small panel displays, today announced sample availability of the LDS8841, the first in a family of innovative LED drivers. This family is the company's second product line, with initial offerings engineered to address mobile backlighting applications including small and medium panel LCD displays.
LCD display modules require a backlight unit (BLU) to supply the light illuminating the screen. While Leadis' existing line of display drivers transforms the backlight into colors visible on the screen, the new line of LED drivers control the intensity of this backlight. The LCD module uses at least 50% of the active power consumed by a mobile handset. Historically, LED drivers have been functionally independent of LCD display drivers. However, as power savings becomes an increasingly significant factor in display module performance, communication between LED and LCD drivers is an essential requirement. Combining this new family of LED drivers with Leadis' own proprietary algorithm embedded in a family of upcoming LCD drivers, Leadis provides a complete system solution for display modules achieving up to 50% power savings compared to today's architectures.
"There is a great deal of technical and business synergy between our existing display driver business and our new line of LED drivers," said Tony Alvarez, President and CEO of Leadis Technology. "In building the LED driver business, we can leverage both our core competency in analog/mixed-signal design and our existing customer channels in the mobile handset market. Moreover, we see system architecture trends moving definitively toward the interfacing of these two critical display components."
The LDS8841 is designed to drive up to four LEDs at current levels as high as 31mA each. Dimming control for all channels is achieved though a series of clock pulses on the one wire interface, allowing LED brightness to be reduced in 1mA increments. The device features 1x and 1.5x pump modes and is compatible with input voltages from 3v to 5.5v at efficiency levels as high as 91%. A 3mm x 3mm thin DFN package and use of small 1uF external capacitors enable a space-efficient solution well suited to portable form factors.
"I am extremely pleased to announce the start of Leadis' LED driver product line and availability of our first product, the LDS8841," said Donato Montanari, Vice President and General Manager of LED Drivers. "According to a leading market research provider, the total worldwide LED driver market is expected to grow over 19% annually, exceeding $1.3 billion in 2010, and Leadis is committed to providing compelling solutions that address this rapidly expanding market."
About the LDS8841
The LDS8841 is a high-efficiency 1x/1.5x fractional charge pump capable of driving up to four LEDs at 31mA each. LED dimming control is programmable with a one wire interface stepping down current levels on all four channels in 1mA steps, supporting levels from 0mA to 31mA.
Input voltages from 3v to 5.5v are supported with efficiency up to 91%. Operation at a constant switching frequency of 1MHz enables low noise input ripple and utilization of small external ceramic capacitors. Other product features include soft start and current limiting, thermal shutdown and short circuit protection, and a "zero" current shutdown mode. The LDS8841 is offered in a 12-lead thin DFN 3mm x 3mm package with a maximum height of 0.8mm.
