LED Chips measure only 0.095 mm in height.

Press Release Summary:

RazerThin(TM) LEDs are offered in 460 and 470 nm blue versions with typical brightness of 7 mW and forward voltage of 2.9 V when operated at 5 mA. Silicon carbide substrate provides ESD-resistant, vertical chip structure requiring single wire bond that permits less complex LED assembly. Potential applications include blue and white keypad backlighting, as well as digital camera flash for mobile appliances.

Cree Launches Production of Its RazerThin(TM) LED Products

Durham, NC, July 22, 2003 - Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) today announced that it has begun volume production of its new RazerThin(TM) light emitting diode (LED) products. These chips are thinner than Cree's standard products at 0.095mm in height versus 0.250mm for the standard LED products, and offer high quality brightness at a lower forward voltage. Product specifications include a typical brightness of 7mW and forward voltage of 3.2V when operated at 20mA. The typical forward voltage is only 2.9V when operated at 5mA which is more characteristic for battery based mobile appliances where these new products are targeted. These devices are currently available in 460nm and 470nm blue versions.

Mike Dunn, Vice President, Optoelectronics stated, "The trend in mobile appliances is toward sub-miniaturization along with a lower forward voltage to conserve battery lifetimes. We believe our new RazerThin LED supports this trend while providing a mid-brightness intensity range."

Cree's silicon carbide (SiC) substrate provides customers with the following benefits:

oAn industry standard, ESD resistant, vertical chip structure requiring a single wire bond that permits less complex LED assembly, reduced manufacturing costs and improved reliability.
oA smaller chip size consistent with the industry's trend toward package miniaturization, particularly for surface mount LED applications such as mobile appliance backlighting.

Potential applications for this product include next generation blue and white keypad backlighting as well as the digital camera flash for mobile appliances. For additional product specifications, please refer to the data sheets on Cree's website at www.cree.com under LED Products.

Cree is an advanced semiconductor company that leverages its expertise in silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon (Si) materials technology to produce new and enabling semiconductors. The products include blue, green and ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs), near UV lasers, radio frequency (RF) and microwave devices, and power switching devices. Potential applications for these products include solid state illumination, optical storage, wireless infrastructure and power switching. For more information on Cree, please visit www.cree.com
