Leatherneck Hardware Products Selected for 100% Solar Powered House

When students at the University of Illinois were designing a 100% solar powered, fully functioning home, they chose two popular product lines from Leatherneck Hardware, Inc. for the sliding doors inside and outside the home.

For interior sliding doors, the house features the Flat Track Hardware line and the exterior doors utilize products from the Coburn line. The Flat Track line was introduced in late 2008 in response to industry demand.

"We were extremely pleased when we were selected for this kind of project," said Dale Carlton, Leatherneck's CEO. "Our Flat Track line complimented the distinct styling of the house and was ideal for a situation where space and efficiency are considerations. The Coburn line was also a good fit for the exterior sliding doors."

Leatherneck Hardware is based in Danville, Illinois and has been designing and manufacturing sliding door hardware since 1977. The custom designed sliding hardware can be found in high-end hotels, rustic cabins, unique homes, stylized barns, and office buildings around the world. Leatherneck also designs a distinctive line for aircraft hangar doors.

The University of Illinois has worked for the last 18 months to complete the home to compete in the Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon that takes place in Washington, D.C. in October, 2009, according to the Daily Illini, the student newspaper at the University of Illinois. The competition challenges 20 universities to design, build, fund & present a home on the National mall that will be judged on 10 different categories such as energy production, architecture, engineering, appliances and market viability. Over 200 students have worked together to create a distinctly Midwestern design, using design styles of the historical Illinois Barn and utilizing modern technology and materials to maximize performance.

"I think everything came together very well," said Joe Simon a graduate student at the University of Illinois. "It was designed by a collaborative effort and we are very happy with how it turned out." The home produces three times more energy than it consumes. The extra energy the house produces was used to power the greenhouses next door.

The house is on display in Washington D.C. for competition from Oct. 1 until Oct. 23.
