New Plug-in Allows Rhino® Modeling Software to Run Roland 3D Laser Scanners

LAKE FOREST, CA. May 9, 2005 Roland Advanced Solutions Division (ASD) today introduced a new plug-in that enables Rhino users to setup and run Roland 3D laser scanners with Rhinoceros® surface modeling software.

"Thanks to our open development software environment, we have teamed up with Roland to develop this powerful plug & play solution for reverse modeling," said Robert McNeel, founder and president of Robert McNeel & Associates.

"Now, in addition to designing 3D models, engineers using Rhino software can capture data from the familiar Rhino interface they use everyday," said Gerald Hiller, Roland ASD General Manager. "This makes the reverse modeling process dramatically more efficient for rendering, animation and product design."

Rhino 3.0 software can create, edit, analyze and translate NURBS curves, surfaces and solids in Windows. There are no limits to model complexity, degree, or size. Rhino also supports polygon meshes and point clouds.

Roland LPX-1200 and LPX-250 3D laser scanners are ideal for a variety of popular CAD, CAM and animation applications. They can scan a mobile phone to design blister packaging and/or accessories, scan a hand-sculpted alien for feature animation or scan an ear canal mold for custom hearing aid manufacturing. The LPX-1200 has a scanning resolution of 0.0039", while the LPX-250 scans objects up to 0.008".

Availability

Free of charge, the Rhino plug-in comes bundled with every Roland LPX-250 and LPX-1200 3D laser scanner. It can also be downloaded from the Roland Web site.
