SICK's Next-Generation Safety Laser Scanner Brings Safeguarding to a New Level

New S 3000 Series Boasts Largest Safeguarding Area

MINNEAPOLIS - June 3, 2003 - SICK, the global leader in factory and process automation solutions, announced today its next-generation safety laser scanner for safeguarding applications. The revolutionary S 3000 is an all-in-one solution designed to safeguard large work areas, protecting personnel and equipment from damage and injury in a broad array of applications.

The development of the S 3000 scanner series was based on SICK's decade of experience with a variety of applications of its industry-leading proximity laser scanner (PLS). With this experience and customer input, SICK developed its next-generation scanner to include the features that address specific customer needs.

The S 3000 Series offers maximum flexibility, usable in both stationary and mobile applications as well as for horizontal and vertical safeguarding in point-of-operation, entry/exit and hazardous work areas. Applications of the S 3000 Series include 2D or 3D horizontal or vertical safeguarding of Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs), assembly and production lines, overhead cranes, presses, tube-bending machines, robot loading and unloading stations, palletizers, stacker cranes, Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS), shuttles and fork lift trucks.

The S 3000 features a 190 degree scanning range and four different levels of integrated functionality, for up to 16 user-definable protection scenarios. This integrated functionality enables simultaneous, stationary or dynamic protection within a work cell wherein the operator moves from one area to another (e.g. loading or unloading parts from a machine). The wider scanning range and multiple user-definable zones mean that only one scanner is necessary in applications that previously required multiple, stop-only safety mats, perimeter guards or light curtains to safeguard the same area, translating to significant cost savings.

Most notably, the maximum safety zone radius of 18 ft (5.5 m) or 23 ft (7.0 m) provides safeguarding of a 2 - 3 times larger area than any other safety scanner available on the market today. The corresponding warning zone radius is up to 160 ft (49 m). Both the safety and warning zones can be freely defined via SICK's user-friendly Configuration and Diagnostic Software (CDS) tool. The size and shape of these zones can also be defined to meet specific application requirements. When personnel or objects are detected within the warning zone of the S 3000, the machine is signaled to slow down as an advance warning of and to reduce the
risk prior to entering the hazardous area. When an object or person is detected within the safety zone that consitutes the hazardous area, the S 3000 initiates the shutdown of the machine, or the shutdown of the dangerous state, to prevent injury or equipment damage.

The S 3000 is also able to differentiate nuisance particles from personnel or objects. By recognizing nuisance particles, such as nearby dust particles, weld splatter, extraneous light or
even flying insects, the S 3000 laser scanner can optimize machine runtime and minimize occurrences in which the safeguarding device shuts down the machine for non-hazardous
reasons, thereby increasing machine availability and, therefore, productivity rates.

SICK's S 3000 safety laser scanner has been third-party certified to comply with IEC/EN 61508 SIL 2, and safety standard IEC/EN 61496, as a Type 3 safety device. This scanner was also designed in compliance with ANSI/RIA 15.06, CSA Z434-03 and ANSI/ASME B56.5. The S 3000 is capable of hand, arm, leg and body detection as the device has a resolution of between 1.2 in (30 mm) and 5.9 in (150 mm) within the safety zone ranges of up to 23 ft (7 m).
