Laser provides 260 nm tuning range.

Press Release Summary:

Chameleon-XR produces femtosecond pulses with greater than 1 W average output power. Patented PowerPulse(TM) dispersion-balanced tuning mechanism optimizes output power and pulse width automatically. Miniature closed-loop air recirculator allows users to access wavelengths above 920 nm without requiring external purge. Its 720-980 nm tuning range makes it suitable for time-resolved photoluminescence, non-linear spectroscopy, fluorescence upconversion, and quantum chemistry.

Coherent Debuts the First Hands-Free Ultrafast Ti:Sapphire Laser to Tune 260 nm

Santa Clara, Calif., March 8, 2004 -Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR), building on the success of its Chameleon(TM), the first hands-free ultrafast laser to tune more than 210 nm, introduces the Chameleon-XR, a new addition to the product family that provides an extended 260 nm tuning range covering 720-980 nm.

"The extended 260 nm tuning range of the new Chameleon-XR represents an important stride forward for the application of multi-photon excitation microscopy. The longer wavelengths the Chameleon-XR provides will give biologists the capability to image deeper into specimens, and to excite cutting-edge fluorophores such as YFP and DsRed more optimally," said Leigh Bromley, Coherent product line manager. "The longer wavelengths will also reduce photo-bleaching effects in the sample, giving increased cell viability."

Like other members of the Chameleon family, Chameleon-XR produces femtosecond pulses with greater than 1W average output power. Its superb beam quality and a pulse width optimized for minimal broadening in most microscopes also ensure intense sample excitation. Chameleon-XR uses a patented Power Pulse(TM) dispersion-balanced tuning mechanism to optimize output power and pulse width automatically, at all times and all wavelengths, while its industry-leading Verdi(TM) pump laser ensures Chameleon-XR is among the quietest and most reliable hands-free ultrafast lasers. Chameleon-XR also features a unique miniature closed-loop air re-circulator, which allows users to access wavelengths above 920 nm without requiring an inconvenient external purge.
In addition to multi-photon excitation microscopy, the Chameleon-XR's 720 to 980 nm tuning range makes it ideal for a host of other applications, including time-resolved photoluminescence, non-linear spectroscopy, fluorescence upconversion and quantum chemistry.
