Photodigm Introduces High-Power, Single-Frequency Semiconductor Diode Laser Platform

High-Performance Laser Technology Delivers Unmatched Power and Efficiency Advantages

RICHARDSON, Texas, May 7 // -- Photodigm, Inc., a specialist in photonics technology for communications, digital imaging, defense, and medical device applications, today entered the global laser market with a proprietary semiconductor diode laser technology platform that delivers new efficiency and diffraction-limited beam quality advantages over conventional laser solutions. The company's advanced diode laser process technology provides a single- frequency beam at power levels that up until now could only be achieved with a diode-pumped solid-state laser (DPSS), such as an Nd:YAG laser.

Semiconductor lasers offer well-known efficiency and low-cost advantages, making them the laser of choice in applications ranging from telecom to data storage. Until now, however, it has been impossible to combine the attributes of high power, diffraction-limited beam quality, low astigmatism, and single- frequency operation in one device. Photodigm has applied its laser design and process technology to create the world's first product that combines all of these characteristics in a high-power diode laser. Photodigm believes that this device will be an enabler of new, lower-cost, higher-efficiency products in segments such as digital imaging, defense, and free space communications.

Developed by a team of semiconductor laser experts, Photodigm's new platform is based on a proprietary Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) ridge waveguide process that is yielding devices that deliver unmatched performance. The quantum-well epitaxial design enables power in excess of 500 mW, with wall plug efficiencies up to 50 percent, while maintaining single-frequency operation. Photodigm DBR lasers provide the optical performance of a DPSS laser without the efficiency penalty of the DPSS laser's quantum defect. Furthermore, unlike a DPSS laser, they can be produced at wavelengths throughout the semiconductor material spectral range.

According to Photodigm CEO John E. Spencer, Ph.D., "We're excited to enable customers with a new-breed semiconductor laser technology that delivers unmatched efficiency and diffraction-limited beam quality along with high reliability and a pure semiconductor cost structure. We believe that our technology represents a significant improvement over conventional broad-area and DPSS solutions. The immediate availability of our devices, coupled with our long-term roadmap to higher powers and additional wavelengths, means that we can provide our customers with a strategic advantage as they design their next-generation products. We're looking forward to establishing strong traction in multiple market segments," noted Spencer.

Evaluation units of Photodigm's new high-power laser products are available today in specific wavelengths ranging between 920 nm and 1100 nm.
