Micrel Launches New 4.25G Laser Driver and Post Amplifier Chipset Solution for Datacom Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 17 / -- Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today launched a new 4.25Gbps chipset that includes the SY88992L, a VCSEL laser driver, and the SY88403L, a post amplifier, to support fast growing 4X fiber channel applications. These ICs are all currently available in volume with pricing starting at $1.95 for 10K quantities.

The SY88992L offers up to 25mA modulation current and operates from 155Mbps to 4.25Gbps making it ideal for a wide variety of applications for the datacom market including 4X fiber channel. The IC offers programmable peaking with variable duration option for better VCSEL response as well as balanced peaking, on the rising and falling edges. It is fully controllable with Micrel's MIC3001, a SFP management IC with internal calibration.

The SY88403L is a 4.25Gbps post amplifier featuring higher gain and lower sensitivity for loss of signal indicator. The product, along with the SY88992L and MIC3001, completes the 4.25G chipset targeting 4X fiber channel applications. The IC is also the latest solution to be rolled out as part of Micrel's next-generation family of Post Amplifiers. The solutions were first launched in early 2005 and are designed for Fast Ethernet to 4X fiber channel data rates. The new chip is offered in small form factor packages and ideally suited for optical modules.

"Today's insatiable demand for speed from datacomm applications requires not only the highest speed but also lowest cost solution," noted Thomas S. Wong, vice president high bandwidth products, Micrel. "SY88403L and SY88992L provide the optimal solution for low cost 4X fiber channel applications."

The SY88992L is available in a small form factor, 16-pin, and 3 mm x 3 mm MLF(TM) packaging. The SY88403L is available in a small form factor, 16-pin, and 3 mm x 3 mm MLF(TM) and Micrel's well regarded MSOP packaging with backward-compatibility to Micrel's existing family of Post Amplifiers.
