New Key Exchange Unit Protects Employees Working With Dangerous Machinery

Erlanger, KY: Industrial safety specialist Fortress Interlocks has launched XM (exchange module), a robust, modular mechanical key exchange unit used to exchange one or more keys for a number of other keys. Part of Fortress' new mGard range of modular interlocks protecting employees working with dangerous machinery, the unit forms the link between isolation devices and access locks.

XM allows a number of secondary functions following an initial action, such as the simultaneous opening of several guard doors around a machine enclosure once the power supply to the machine has been isolated. Any combination of isolation keys and access keys is possible.

Keys used to gain access are mechanically trapped until other keys from the isolation points are inserted and turned. Only when all isolation keys are inserted can an access key be removed. Removing the access keys mechanically traps the isolation keys in place.

XM features a patented sequencing system and is simple to configure. A system using XM can be expanded at any time with the addition of more modules or trimmed down and the surplus modules used elsewhere.

XM features a die-cast zinc body with pearl bronze finish. All internal contact components, lock mechanism and key are constructed using stainless steel. Fully stainless steel versions of the modules are also available. Tested to over 1 million operations, the units require minimal maintenance.

In conjunction with the XM, Fortress has launched DM (door module), a robust modular access interlock suitable for use on all types of doors. The unit is available with a selection of robust, all stainless steel actuators suitable for both hinged and sliding doors. The head features a choice of four head rotation angles and two actuator entry points.
