IBM LoadLeveler for Linux Delivers Job Scheduling for IBM eServer pSeries and IBM eServer xSeries Platforms Running Linux

Overview

LoadLeveler® for Linux is a versatile workload management system for serial and parallel batch jobs that is focused on ease of use, efficiency, reliability, and availability.

With LoadLeveler, end users can view a cluster of systems as a single computational resource, dispatching jobs and balancing the workload across various systems in the network with optimum productivity. You can run more jobs in less time because LoadLeveler matches processing needs to available resources.

· An easy-to-use GUI builds, submits, and processes jobs, allowing end users and administrators to view the status of jobs and machines online.

· An API allows end users to plug in their own scheduler to enable an alternate scheduling algorithm, providing flexibility.

· LoadLeveler is better able to handle network and system outages without losing information thanks to a common daemon framework with multithreaded processes and object-oriented technologies that provides stability, reliability, and scalability.

· Authorized users can set the overall priority of jobs and how they are scheduled, control the jobs, and gather statistics on how jobs are run.

LoadLeveler for Linux supports an interoperable environment with LoadLeveler for AIX®. When the central manager runs on AIX, AIX and Linux nodes can be mixed within the same cluster. LoadLeveler can then dispatch jobs to run on both Linux and AIX servers.

Key prerequisites

IBM eserver (any of these):

· pSeries® servers running SUSE LINUX Enterprise System 8

· xSeries® servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0

· BladeCenter(TM) Intel(TM)-based blades running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0

Planned availability date

May 28, 2004

At a glance

IBM LoadLeveler for Linux is:

· A subset of the LoadLeveler for AIX 5L product

· Compatible with LoadLeveler for AIX 5L, and a heterogeneous cluster of AIX and Linux nodes is supported

· Supported when run with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 on xSeries servers and BladeCenter Intel-based blades

· Supported when run with SUSE LINUX Enterprise System 8 on pSeries servers

This job management program:

· Allows users to run more jobs in less time by matching processing needs with the available resources

· Schedules applications to clusters of pSeries, xSeries, or BladeCenter servers

· Supports parallel MPICH jobs and parallel MPICH-GM jobs using the Myrinet switch
