JDSU's Broadband Service Assurance Solutions Support First Phase of BT's 21st Century Network Deployment

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 22 -- JDSU today announced that its service assurance solutions were selected by BT to help ensure efficiency and reliability during the first phase of its 21st Century Network (21CN) initiative to migrate from a public-switched telephone network (PSTN) to an all-IP next-generation network that will support advanced broadband technologies and services. JDSU will display its service assurance solutions portfolio at the 21st Century Communications World Forum in London (March 27- 30), booth number 246.

BT selected JDSU's QT-200 family of test heads and software agents for the initial phase of the 21CN customer migration which is taking place in the Cardiff region of Wales. At selected sites, the QT-200 will conduct fault management and service provisioning, interfacing with the existing test and diagnostic functions in its operations support system (OSS), known as GTC WOOSH. This new contract builds on more than three years of support JDSU has provided to BT's broadband deployment initiatives via the QT-200 test head technology, with test heads at more than 3,000 sites across the U.K.

"The 21st Century Network is a truly innovative and exciting transformation to a next-generation network and JDSU is proud to continue supporting BT's broadband deployment with our service assurance solutions," said Helmut Berg, senior vice president of JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement Group. "The QT-200 has a proven track record with BT, helping to meet the demands of broadband growth with efficiency and reliability."

"JDSU has been an important partner in our ability to deploy broadband services at a rapid pace over the past three years," said Ray Clay, BT's Head of Test and Diagnostics Strategy for 21CN. "As we enter our initial phase of 21st Century Network customer migration, we look forward to maintaining the benefits of JDSU's service assurance solutions."

Under the terms of the agreement, JDSU will support several stages of customer migration on to the 21CN IP network. BT will use JDSU's solution to test and assure the new next-generation network for quality and reliability before migrating customers from its legacy network. During the initial phase, the QT-200 will support the Evolutionary Test Access Matrix (EVOTAM) by delivering automated remote test tools for DSL and copper plant. JDSU will also commission the multi-service access node (MSAN) and perform transfer engineering functions that test and verify the quality of the new services.

About JDSU's QT-200

JDSU's QT-200, part of the company's service assurance offerings, is a Web-based, open solution both in terms of standards (UNIX/Linux, XML, web- based, ETSI, ANSI, etc.) as well as emerging technologies and customer needs (Voice over IP and ATM, G.SHDSL, VDSL, ADSL2). The solution integrates copper tests (narrowband and wideband) as well as service tests. As a result, tests can be performed to address both customer premise and DSL network (DSLAM, ATM/Ethernet backbone, BAS, Radius Servers, and ISPs) issues. The QT-200 enables efficient customer call management for network operators, which saves days in mean time to repair (MTTR). It also reduces the need to deploy technicians to identify faults and helps prevent dispatching a technician to fix a potential problem on the network where there are, in fact, no faults.
