Jakarta Hotel, Shopping, Entertainment, Office and Residential Complex Launches On-Site Power Plant to Avoid Energy Shortages

Indonesia's Commercial, Industrial Sectors Drive Demand for Cost Effective, Reliable On-site Power

JAKARTA, INDONESIA-July 16, 2009-GE Energy announced today the official start-up of a new Jenbacher gas engine onsite power plant, part of a multi-year expansion of Plaza Indonesia's five-star hotel, shopping and entertainment center, office building and residential complex in the nation's capital city of Jakarta.

The 24.6-MW plant demonstrates how Indonesian companies are looking at innovative ways to ensure continuous power supplies for their operations since the national grid is unable to meet the continuing, growing demand for electricity.

Plaza Indonesia's power plant features nine of GE Energy's natural gas-fueled, Jenbacher generator sets that will provide both reliable and economic on-site power for the entire complex.

The Plaza Indonesia project is one of the most prominent orders for GE Energy's Jenbacher gas engines in Indonesia, a strong growth area for GE's onsite power solutions due to the country's abundant natural gas supply, combined with a growing demand by the commercial and industrial sectors for more reliable, cost-effective electricity.

"By generating our own power, Plaza Indonesia is making sure that professionals can work seamlessly, hotel guests can enjoy the amenities continuously and shoppers' enjoyment at the mall is not disrupted. GE Energy's Jenbacher gas engine technology offers the reliability and performance we need to help assure a continuous power supply that supports our commitment to ensure the best service for our various customers," said Herman Bunyamin, director of Plaza Indonesia.

For the mixed-use Plaza Indonesia Complex project in the heart of Jakarta's business district, GE supplied nine of its JGS 620 GS-N.L generator sets, which will generate a total of 24.58 MW of electricity, with an efficiency of 42.1 percent. All of the electricity will be used to support the power requirements of the complex.

"With the constant electricity shortages in Jakarta, GE Energy's Jenbacher gas engine technology is an innovative solution that businesses are using to minimize their risk. In addition, by using natural gas, Plaza Indonesia will be generating power that is from a cleaner source than the fuels used to supply the grid," said Gatot Prawiro, GE Energy country executive for Indonesia.

The Plaza Indonesia Complex has a long history, with its Plaza Indonesia Shopping Center opening in 1990, followed by its five-star diamond hotel Grand Hyatt Jakarta in 1991 and its Plaza Indonesia Entertainment center in 2004.

The complex expansion is one of Asia's most prestigious developments. With 220,000 square meters in gross area, the project will integrate a six-story retail and cinema complex, a 41-story office tower and an exclusive, 48-story apartment complex adjacent to the existing facilities. GE's Jenbacher units will support the entire Plaza Indonesia project, which will be complete with the new office complex at The Plaza as well as The Keraton residential tower in 2009.

GE is well-represented in Indonesia through its regional equipment and services provider for Jenbacher gas engines, Navigat Energy Pte. Ltd. Navigat Energy installed the Plaza Indonesia power plant on a turn-key basis and has entered a multi-year operation and maintenance contract to support the facility.
