Original Press Release:

TippingPoint Sets Performance Benchmark with the First Five Gigabit Intrusion Prevention System

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 14 -- TippingPoint, a division of 3Com (NASDAQ:COMS) and the leader in intrusion prevention, today announced the availability of the TippingPoint 5000E Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), the first and only IPS capable of performing total packet inspection and prevention at five gigabits per second (Gbps) with real world traffic, making it the most powerful IPS. The product will ship next month.

The TippingPoint 5000E is ideal for organizations with high throughput requirements. It comes with eight Gigabit Ethernet ports able to protect four network segments. With the full set of award-winning security features in TippingPoint's IPS product line, the TippingPoint 5000E also comes with Advanced Denial of Service capabilities to alleviate extremely complex SYN floods, established connection floods, and connection per second floods.

"Performance and throughput are key criteria when selecting an IPS," said Greg Young, a research director at Gartner. "IPS as a proactive defense can be a powerful part of an organization's enterprise protection model. However, there is no 'one size fits all' IPS. The decision drivers involve differences in throughput, features, memory and cost."

The TippingPoint product line is automatically kept up-to-date through the Digital Vaccine service. It remotely updates TippingPoint systems with new vulnerability filters, signatures, protocol anomaly filters, and traffic anomaly filters to preemptively protect against the latest worms, viruses, Trojans, Denial of Service attacks, Spyware, and VoIP threats. TippingPoint's Digital Vaccine service offers fast, comprehensive threat coverage at a rate that outpaces industry standards.

"With throughput of five Gbps, the TippingPoint 5000E offers more than double any other IPS's maximum rated throughput," said TippingPoint's Chief Technology Officer Marc Willebeek-LeMair. "TippingPoint has consistently led and surpassed its competitors in the area of performance. When we shipped the first two Gbps IPS in 2002, it was also significantly more than our competitors who could only handle throughput in the megabit range. Throughput is extremely important to our customers, so we will continue to pioneer and innovate in this arena."

"With the TippingPoint 5000E, TippingPoint has taken a huge leap forward," said Doug Brown, Manager of Security Resources for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "This product offers extremely powerful performance with the same blocking capabilities as the TippingPoint products we have used since August 2003 when it protected us from the Blaster and Welchia viruses. TippingPoint's products are a strong part of our organization's proactive security measures, blocking thousands of attacks each day and saving us countless dollars in downtime, damages, and remediation."

TippingPoint's Intrusion Prevention Systems provide Application Protection, Performance Protection and Infrastructure Protection at gigabit speeds through total packet inspection. Application Protection capabilities provide fast, accurate, reliable protection from internal and external cyber attacks. Through its Infrastructure Protection capabilities, TippingPoint's IPS protects VoIP infrastructure, routers, switches, DNS and other critical infrastructure from targeted attacks and traffic anomalies. TippingPoint's Performance Protection capabilities enable customers to throttle non-mission critical applications that hijack valuable bandwidth and IT resources, thereby aligning network resources and business-critical application performance.
