Sensors Unlimited Unveils New Short Wave Infrared Microcamera and Focal Plane Array

Princeton, NJ, November 19, 2002 - Sensors Unlimited, a leading provider of innovative solutions based on indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) technology, today announces its newest room temperature indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) short-wave infrared SUI(TM) Microcamera. The SU320UM delivers high resolution images from a 320 x 256 InGaAs image sensor that is sensitive in the 900 to 1700nm spectral range. The lightweight, low power camera weighs in at less than 60 g and is smaller than 27 cm³, about the size of a C cell battery. Developed with funding from DARPA, the camera is optimized for applications where space and weight are at a premium, including robotic systems and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Sensors unlimited will be exhibiting this camera at booth # 639 during the eastern analytical symposium & expo in Somerset, NJ on November 18-21.

"The sensors unlimited team has once again pushed the technological barrier in short wave infrared imaging with the smallest and lightest camera available," remarks dr. Marshall Cohen, president. "This camera's performance, size and simplicity will open new markets. Quantity pricing is well below that for any comparable camera."

The SUI(TM) microcamera utilizes Sensors Unlimited's newest InGaAs focal plane array technology. The new 320x256 element focal plane array has a 25um pixel spacing and establishes a new state-of-the-art for functionality. Features include snapshot exposures as short as 150ns and frame rates faster than 5000 fps. Its dynamic windowing capability allows multiple regions-of-interest to be read out and redefined with each frame. According to dr. Martin Ettenberg, director of imaging products, "these features make the new focal plane array an excellent choice for range-gated imaging and high-speed target acquisition and tracking applications at eye-safe wavelengths."

The SUI(TM) microcamera is an RS-170 compatible camera able to display fully processed imagery on a standard television without requiring a computer. The camera also outputs 12 bit digital data through a camera link(tm) connection allowing the transfer of images to computers for detailed image analysis. The focal plane array has continuously variable in-pixel current gain allowing the camera to be customized for specific applications ranging from high intensity laser beam profiling to low light level night vision imaging.
