Hybrid Bearings offer alternative to all-steel bearings.

Press Release Summary:

Featuring wear resistance, Hybrid Bearings combine silicon nitride rolling elements with steel rings. Inherent insulating properties prevent electrical arcing, which can cause fluting pattern surface damage to raceways. Standard types include hybrid single row, deep groove ball bearings with bore diameters from 5-110 mm; sealed and greased-for-life ball bearings protected by steel-reinforced, synthetic rubber seals; and open basic design bearings without seals.

SKF® Hybrid Bearings with Ceramic Rolling Elements Promote Optimized Performance and Longer Life

SKF® hybrid bearings combine silicon nitride (ceramic) rolling elements with steel rings to serve as lighter, harder, and more durable alternatives to conventional all-steel counterparts. These bearings can run at higher speeds and lower operating temperatures, offer inherent insulating properties, and exhibit superior wear-resistance for optimized performance and longer service life.

SKF hybrid ceramic balls are 40% less dense than steel balls for reduced centrifugal force and friction, enabling them to run faster and cooler; harder than steel for enhanced wear resistance against hard particles, contaminants, and vibration; and highly inelastic for increased bearing stiffness and reduced deflection under load to promote reliable performance. Additionally, these hybrid bearings provide enhanced service life compared with all-steel bearings under poor lubrication conditions.

Natural insulating properties prevent electrical arcing, which can cause fluting-pattern surface damage to raceways, typically resulting in excessive noise and a need for costly bearing replacement. Their insulation makes these bearings ideal for large variable-speed electric motors.

Standard types include hybrid single row deep groove ball bearings with bore diameters from 5mm to 110mm; sealed and greased-for-life ball bearings protected by steel-reinforced synthetic rubber seals and filled with premium lubricant conforming to SKF's own particular specification; and open basic design bearings available without seals.

Customized SKF hybrid bearings can further be developed to meet specific application requirements.
