Makino Introduces J4M Horizontal Machining Center

Core Component For Flexible Transfer Line Machining

MASON, OH-September, 2004-The J4M horizontal machining center (HMC) from Makino is an ideal machine for high-volume part manufacturers seeking high-speed productivity, superb accuracy and outstanding reliability. The speedy J4M has a tool-to-tool time of 1.1 seconds, and a chip-to-chip time of 1.2 seconds.

With an innovative space and energy saving design, the J4M is the optimum technology for simple and cost-effective machining in flexible transfer lines. It measures only (2801 mm) in height, with a depth and width of (1500 x 4075 mm). Along with Makino's standard three-point leveling, this small footprint and compact design allows for easy mobility and reconfiguration.

This state-of-the-art control technology will be launched during the year in preparation for a formal introduction at the 2004 International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, September 8 through 15. Visit the main Makino Booth #8400 in Hall A of the South Building, or the EDM Pavilion Booth #4110 in Hall D.

J4M Features
The J4M has an X-, Y- and Z-axis of 19.69 x 22.05 x 19.69 inches (500 x 560 x 500 mm), with an optional X-axis upgrade of 29.53 inches (750 mm). With a rapid traverse of 2,362 ipm (60,000 mm/min) and a feedrate of 1,969 ipm (50,000 mm/min), it is a highly productive HMC with a 16,000-rpm spindle and an HSK-63A tooling interface as standard.

The reliable and detailed J4M has a positioning accuracy of +/- 0.00016/ 0.00012 inches (+/- 0.004/ 0.003 mm) and a repeatability of +/- 0.00012/ 0.00006 inches (+/- 0.003/0.0015 mm), respectively without and with scales. And, the standard 15-tool automatic tool changer (ATC) can handle a variety of tools, up to 17.64 pounds (8 kg) in weight, 12.21 inches (310 mm) in length and 4.33 inches (110 mm) in diameter.

Options for the J4M include a special, high-powered spindle, a 30- and a 45-tool ATC and a rack-type ATC design which will accommodate oversized and overweight tools. The machine also comes with an optional index table, an AB-axis tilting table, a U-axis and a W-axis for complex and flexible transfer line machining.
