Cincinnati Lamb's HPC-800HP Sets Benchmark For Productivity and Value In Horizontal Processing

Mega Series HMC produces parts 30-percent faster, at lower cost than previous 800mm machines

WARREN, Mich. January 7, 2004 - With the launch of the HPC-800HP Mega series horizontal machining center, engineers from Cincinnati Lamb are confident they have met their goal of developing the most productive machine in its class. "The new HPC-800HP is truly a breakthrough machine," says Rich Curless, director of global research and development at Cincinnati Lamb. "We wanted to design a machine with the performance and versatility necessary for processing a wide range of parts efficiently and at lower cost. The HPC-800HP sets new standards for speed, accuracy and stiffness, while meeting our customers' needs for adaptability, reliability and simplicity."

Initially offered in an 800mm size, the HPC-800HP provides large-job-processing capabilities for parts up to 51.2 in. (1300 mm) diameter and 59 in. (1500 mm) high. Its X-Y-Z travels of 57.0 x 43.3 x 49.8 in. (1450 x 1100 x 1265 mm) are more typical of 1000-mm size machines. A fast tool-delivery system, featuring 0.9-sec tool-to-tool interchange and tool queuing that eliminates next-tool wait, reduces non-productive time. In addition, nonvalue-added time is virtually eliminated by the 8.0-sec. pallet exchange. The HPC-800HP is offered with cell and multi-pallet carousel exchange. Further reducing non-cut times are an acceleration rate of 1.5 g, rapid feedrates of 3,150 ipm in the X and Y axes, and a 2,363 ipm-feedrate in the Z-axis.

Superior metal removal rates in processing both aluminum and a variety of hard metals are achieved by the HPC-800HP's XT option, featuring a new 60 HP (45 kW) two-range geared, #50 taper or HSK-100A spindle with either 6,500 or 10,000 rpm, giving a maximum torque of 845 ft. lbs. (1,146 Nm); or the AP option, offering an integral, high-speed HSK-63A spindle with either 15,000 or 24,000 rpm. A tilt spindle for full 5-axis contouring is available in both the XT and AP configurations.

The machine's B-axis table delivers 25-rpm rotation and a 4,840-lb payload for high-speed processing of heavy workloads. Positioning and contouring configurations as well as pallets measuring 31.5 x 31.5 in. and 31.5 x 39.3 in. are available.

The HPC-800HP's symmetrical design maximizes thermal stability and reduces geometrical distortion. Additionally, dual-ballscrew support on all axes, caged-ball linear-motion guides, and absolute-axis feedback promotes high machine accuracies. The machine maintains X,Y,Z positioning accuracy of +/- 0.0002 in. and repeatability of +/- 0.00008 in.

Designed with an extra-large center trough and maintenance-free coolant filtration system, the HPC-800HP easily removes heavy chip volumes. The standard 40 tool chain handles 66 lb. (30 kg) tools up to 11.8" (300 mm) diameter and 27" (690 mm) long.

Its three-point machine leveling, single piece bed and compact footprint ensure fast installation with no special foundation. The HPC-800HP is equipped with the powerful, easy-to-use Fanuc 160i-MB dual-processing CNC running on the Windows 2000® operating system. Touch-screen technology and a mobile hand-held control provide a user-friendly interface and the rotating CNC console swings between the load station and the operator station for full access and monitoring.
