Mazak's PFH-4800 Leads in Horizontal Machining Center Productivity

(FLORENCE, KY) - Mazak's PFH-4800 horizontal machining center is a highly advanced production center that can handle volume output without losing the flexibility for constant changes in designs and lot sizes. With new design and technology improvements, the PFH-4800 has 20% greater productivity, putting it at the head of the class for 400-mm pallet-sized horizontal machining centers.

The PFH-4800 provides high-speed, high-efficiency machining with feed rates of up to 2362 IPM for X, Y, Z axes, 1.0 G acceleration, a 1.5 sec. table index per 90° of rotation. 2.2 sec. chip-to-chip time, and a 15,000 RPM spindle with 1.9-sec. acceleration.

The PFH-4800 uses advanced design to reduce thermal distortion, using coolant to maintain a constant temperature around the spindle and through each axis ball screw. During rapid feed, rapid acceleration and prolonged operation, an unprotected ball screw undergoes thermal expansion and machining accuracy can suffer. Passing coolant through the core of the ball screw and around the spindle prevents thermal displacement of the ball screw, allowing high-accuracy machining over extended machine operation. Positioning accuracy on the PFH-4800 is +/- 0.00012 in. and repeatability is +/- 0.00004 in.

For increased throughput, Mazak's PFH-4800 base configuration offers a two-pallet shuttle system that allows part loading to be performed while the spindle is cutting. Pallet-to-pallet change takes just five seconds. A 15.7 in. x 15.7 in. pallet size is standard with axis strokes of X=22.0 in., Y=24.8 in. and Z=23.6 in. with 1 G acceleration.

Mazak's PFH-4800 has a powerful 40-HP spindle drive and a 15,000 RPM spindle with 123 ft. lbs. of torque for heavy cutting of steel and aluminum materials. A 25,000 RPM spindle is offered for aerospace parts or molds requiring super-high speeds, while a 12,000 RPM spindle is available for higher torque at 224 ft. lbs.

Tool change takes only 2.2 seconds chip-to-chip and tool magazine capacity is 40 tools (80, 120, 160, 240, and 330 are options) with a No. 40 taper.

Mazak's PFH-4800 is one of the industry's most rigid horizontal machining centers, assured by FEA design analysis and a rigid Meehanite cast iron construction which provides superior vibration dampening and heat dissipating characteristics. By being rigid, distortion is minimized for consistently high accuracy. With a 24.8-in. stroke in Y, a large number of workpieces can be mounted to a tombstone pallet/fixture in order to produce more work per pallet.

Mazak is a world leader in machine tool technology.
