Horizon Wi-Com First to Launch WiMAX in Major U.S. Cities with Navini and Black and Veatch

New York, Boston, Washington among the first to experience true personal broadband

RICHARDSON, Texas, June 12 / / - Horizon Wi-Com is trialing its high-speed wireless broadband service in major U.S. cities in the Northeast region using 802.16e compatible equipment from Navini Networks, the global leader in providing broadband wireless access solutions.

Phase I of the deployment will implement service in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Richmond, and Cincinnati. Horizon Wi-Com purchased the WCS A Block spectrum previously owned by Verizon.

"We are first. We have completed Phase I and are now trialing subscribers in some of the most exciting cities," said Ron Olexa, President of Horizon Wi-Com. "We will provide high-speed internet access to residential and business users in markets containing approximately 70 million POPs."

"Navini's software upgrade to Mobile WiMAX(TM) will allow Horizon to implement the first network deployment in major U.S. cities," said Roger Dorf, Navini's president and CEO. "Delivering WiMAX in the U.S. is a key strategic opportunity for us and Horizon Wi-Com is the right partner."

The deployment features Navini's Ripwave(R)MX8 platform that is being certified for 802.16e mobile WiMAX with Navini's Smart WiMAX(TM) solution. Smart WiMAX(TM) combines Mobile WiMAX(TM)with the Smart Beamforming technology currently in commercial service around the world, with beamformed MIMO, which can reliably double the data throughput for WiMAX subscribers.

This allows Horizon Wi-Com to deploy less base stations with more complete coverage and higher speeds. Networks are already live and serving customers in each of the major cities covered by the Horizon licenses. Full commercial launch will begin after Navini completes WiMAX Forum Wave 2 certification.

Partnering with Black & Veatch for site build-out was a key element in the successful deployment. Horizon Wi-Com's aggressive deployment schedule required comprehensive site development and construction support.

"Black & Veatch was selected to provide the necessary support and program management due to their experience and past success with other wireless projects," stated Olexa.

"This project has been an excellent opportunity for Black & Veatch to showcase some of its key core project competencies such as site acquisition, engineering, field craft skill set, field construction management and overall project management. This partnership to complete Phase I sites with Horizon Wi-Com and Navini has proven to be a successful combination of talented resources," stated Tim Cummings, Project Manager, Black & Veatch.
