Hollow Shaft Resolvers Monitor Motor Position and Speed
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 7 - Tyco Electronics recently unveiled a line of hollow shaft resolvers for the North American market. Hollow shaft resolvers, also known as absolute shaft angle transducers, are highly reliable sensing devices used to monitor motor shaft position. Hollow shaft resolvers are well suited for most hostile environments and maintain their performance over long periods. This type of sensor is particularly useful in military applications, aerospace applications as well as industrial machinery, robotics, factory automation, process controls and medical instrumentation.
The resolver consists of a stationary stator and a movable rotor. It operates like two transformers; one supplies the rotor with power while the second transformer determines the motor shaft angle. A "resolver to digital" converter (R/D) is used to process the output signals of these two transformers (both in the form of sine and cosine waves) into absolute motor shaft angle data.
Tyco Electronics offers a full line of frameless or hollow shaft resolvers for industry standard frame sizes 15 and 21 (for 1.5" or 2.1" OD shafts). Both are available in various housing materials such as Cr-Ni steel, aluminum, Cr-Mo steel as well as various precisions from +/- 10 angular minute down to +/- 4 angular minute. Additionally, designers can select from a range of speeds and output impedance. The maximum rotational speed of this product is 20,000 rpm.
