Giddings & Lewis HMC 170 Horizontal Machining Center Available with Multiple Pallet Storage Systems
Fond du Lac, WI - May 2002 - - Several of the Giddings & Lewis HMC series models are available with multiple pallet storage systems (MPSS). An HMC 170 with an eight-pallet MPSS will be on display at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in September.
Multiple-pallet storage system
The multiple pallet storage system includes a setup station, six queue locations and the machine pallet. The load station rotates a full 360 degrees, facilitating part loading and unloading. A dedicated Siemens 840D control handles the pallet system operations and provides a handshake to the machine control.
Powerful package of standard features
There are seven models within the HMC Series with pallets ranging from 500 to 1600 mm. The HMC 170, a 630 x 500 mm horizontal machining center, has a significant workspace capable of machining parts 35.4 inches (900 mm) in diameter and 43.3 inches (1100 mm) in height. HMC Series machines are equipped with many productive standard features including linear scales, a 100-tool cassette-style magazine and 1015-psi coolant through-the-spindle.
Speed and power
The combination of speed and power make the HMC 170 a productive machine tool. Traverse rates of 36 m/min, a 2.5-second tool-to-tool change time and 10-second pallet change cut non-productive time, resulting in more time in the cut.
The 61.5-hp spindle drive provides the power for heavy-duty metal removal. The two-speed, clutchless gearbox produces a speed/torque ratio that optimizes cutting for both high-speed and high-torque applications. The 6,000 rpm spindle is standard. Higher speed 10,000 and 12,000 rpm spindles are also available.
Tool magazines make setup fast and convenient
The 100-tool magazine is a flexible design using two 50-tool cassettes. Additional capacity may be added in 50 tool increments to a maximum of 200 tools. The cassette design is easily removed, making it possible to set up complete tool sets off-line during the machining cycle and changeout the cassettes in a matter of minutes. The magazines are able to handle large tools needed for heavy machining. The maximum tool weight allowable is 88 lbs. (40 kg).
Choice of Fanuc or Siemens Control
The HMC Series is now offered with a choice of either the Fanuc 160i-MB or Siemens 840D control. Manufacturers are able to choose the control that fits their shop and manufacturing needs. Both controls offer high-performance standard features and productive options.
Low-maintenance coolant system
The HMC 170 includes a self-cleaning coolant system that efficiently removes chips and reduces maintenance costs.
