Kryptiq Introduces Disease Management Product Developed for Providers

MedStar Health Adopts CareManager(TM) to Leverage Existing Medical Record Data to Improve Care for Patients With Chronic Illnesses

PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 14 -- Kryptiq Corporation, a leading provider of interoperability and workflow connectivity solutions, today announced the availability of Kryptiq CareManager(TM), a disease management application that will make it easier for physicians to provide proactive care to patient populations and to monitor compliance with emerging pay-for-performance criteria. Unlike other disease management applications, Kryptiq CareManager integrates with existing electronic health record (EHR) systems, eliminating duplicative data entry and ensuring proactive care decisions are always based on comprehensive and up-to-date patient information. Kryptiq's CareManager application has been co-developed with Providence Health System, where it is currently in use, and has received numerous accolades from the medical community including the Disease Management Association of America (DMAA) e-Health Leadership Award for 2004.

According to data published by the Center for Disease Control, the cost of treating chronically ill patients accounts for more than 75 percent of the nation's $1.4 trillion in spending on medical care. Much of the opportunity for cost reduction lies in ensuring better adherence to quality of care guidelines for chronic conditions. To this end, MedStar Health, a non-profit, community-based healthcare organization that serves the Baltimore/Washington D.C. region, will be the first organization besides Providence Health System to deploy Kryptiq's CareManager application. MedStar physicians and their staff will now be able to proactively monitor and manage the care of their patients with chronic conditions, beginning with diabetes and stroke prevention, using patient information already stored in their GE Healthcare Centricity(R) Physician Office Electronic Medical Record system.

"CareManager will help our clinicians to identify those patients with chronic diseases who are most in need of medical interventions and we think it will make a real difference," said Peter Basch, M.D., director of e-health initiatives at MedStar Health. "Not only does it identify gaps where care could be optimized; it also helps to educate patients about their health and chronic conditions and why adherence to accepted treatment regimens can help to keep them healthy, allowing patients to become better collaborators in their own healthcare decisions. CareManager can also help us to find and treat patients who are at risk for certain diseases, even prior to diagnosis, closing a major treatment gap that exists today."

CareManager complements existing EHR systems by providing an easy to use solution for managing specific patient populations, identifying patients in an emergent state of disease before they are diagnosed, enabling proactive care outreach, and monitoring compliance to care protocols to ensure patient interventions are followed up on. The application provides a physician dashboard for viewing key health indicators for each patient according to standard guidelines for evidence-based care and may be used to send automated care reminders to prevent possible exacerbations and complications of chronic illnesses.

"This is the type of technology that puts physicians back in the driver's seat when it comes to pay-for-performance. It gives us a tool for quality improvement that allows us to identify and close the gap between good and better patient care," said Joe Siemiemczuk, chief medical officer at Providence Health System. "Providence has seen substantial and sustainable improvements in the quality and consistency of care we provide across our organization as a direct result of using CareManager."
