High Efficiency Half-Brick DC/DC Converter Modules Provide Full 350W Power Output Without Temperature Derating

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., December 2, 2004 - Artesyn Technologies (Nasdaq:ATSN) has launched a series of high-efficiency half-brick isolated DC/DC converters that provide exceptionally high levels of usable power. The new RFB300/350 series of converters includes models capable of delivering up to 350W continuously and without derating, across a very wide baseplate temperature range of -40˚C to +100˚C.

Designed to generate a nominal 12 or 28VDC isolated output, the converters are primarily intended for use with high performance RF (radio frequency) power amplifiers and equipment used in high availability applications such as cellular communication systems. The converters' wide operating temperature range makes them ideal as a compact power source for use in demanding outdoor environments, supporting cellular basestation equipment and last mile broadband equipment.

The RFB300/350 series comprises four models; one with a 24V nominal (18 to 36V) input, and three with 48V nominal (36 to 75V) inputs. The 24V input model provides an output of 11A@28V (308W). The three 48V input models provide outputs of 11A@28V (308W), 12.5A@28V (350W), and 29.2A@12V (350W). To give the user added flexibility, each model comes as standard with a trim function allowing output voltage ranges of 16.8-29.4V (28V) and 7.2- 13.2V (12V). This wide selection of input and output options enables these units to address a broad array of telecom, networking and industrial applications.

All four models use an advanced forward converter topology and fixed-frequency switching to provide very high conversion efficiencies of up to 91% at full load. This minimizes internal power dissipation, which simplifies thermal management and contributes to the converters' excellent reliability. The 28V output models, for example, have a calculated MTBF of more than 2.6 million hours at 55˚C (in accordance with Telcordia SR-332).

RFB300/350 series converters have an industry-standard 2.27 x 2.39inch (57.7 x 60.7mm) half-brick form-factor, and offer a choice of 0.5 or 0.4inch (12.7 or 10.6mm) profiles to suit the available above-board space. The 0.4inch low-profile version of the 350W converter has a very high power density, in excess of 160W/in³ (9.4W/cm³), making it an ideal power solution for applications where space is severely limited. The converters are packaged as fully encapsulated units intended for through-hole board mounting, and incorporate aluminum baseplate technology for conduction cooling. Various heatsink attachment methods are available, and the modules can be supplied with threaded or blank inserts to suit customers' preferences.

Artesyn's RFB300/350 series converters have no minimum load requirement and maintain line and load regulation to ±0.15% and ±0.2% respectively. Remote sense and remote on/off facilities are provided as standard, with negative logic remote on/off available as an option. The converters also feature comprehensive protection against overcurrent, overvoltage and overtemperature conditions. RFB300/350 series converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 VDE, UL/cUL60950, and an IECEE CB Scheme test certificate and report.
