GE's Largest and Most-Efficient H-Class Gas Turbine Supports Energy Independence and Growth in Kazan, Russia
• GE 9HA Gas Turbine to Double Plant’s Electricity Production
• Increased Local Power Generation Strengthens Regional Independence, Improves Reliability
• 9HA Gas Turbine to Replace Current Gas-Fired Boilers, Increase Plant Efficiency to 80 Percent
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Kazan, Russia a city more than 1,000 years old isn’t resting on its ancient laurels. As the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan is enjoying year-over-year business growth and the related expansion of residential neighborhoods. However, the region’s success has created a challenge: Now facing an energy deficit of approximately 700 megawatts (MW), Kazan must import power from neighboring states.
Help in the form of reliable, locally produced energy is on the way. GE (NYSE: GE) has received an order from TGK-16, an independent heat and electricity producer owned by Tatar-American Investment and Finance (TAIF), for an advanced power generation system. The system is based on GE’s 9HA.01 Gas Turbine and will be installed at a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Kazan.
Modernizing the CHP-3 plant will create a total plant efficiency of approximately 80 percent. It also will reduce the region’s power shortage, created in part by increased power consumption from Kazan’s large number of petrochemical industries and refineries. GE will provide the turnkey solution with support from GAMA Power Systems on engineering and construction of the plant.
Ruslan Gizzatullin, deputy CEO for Energy and IT at TAIF OJSC, said, “Updating the Kazan CHP-3 plant will enhance the power supply reliability of the Kazan power district. The Kazan CHP-3 modernization project reflects our strategy to improve reliability and energy efficiency of heat and electric power generation, while securing energy independence.”
GE’s air-cooled HA technology, the world’s largest and most efficient, will operate on natural gas and provide additional electricity for businesses and homes, along with heat for continuous petrochemical production. While using 30 percent less fuel[1, GE’s 9HA power generation system will replace existing gas-fired boilers and increase the CHP facility’s electrical production from 420 MW to 808 MW.
“We are excited to bring our most advanced gas turbine technology to increase the power, reliability and efficiency at the Kazan CHP-3 project,” said Victor Abate, president and CEO, Power Generation Products at GE Power Water. “Our 9HA.01 advanced technology helps to drive leading performance, lower emissions and improved project economics.”
GE will manufacture and assemble the equipment for CHP-3 at production facilities in France, the USA and Turkey. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for the first quarter of 2017.
