Original Press Release:
Beckhoff Automation Adds Comprehensive EtherNet/IP Support to TwinCAT Software
One open software package can communicate with all EtherNet/IP slave devices and entire Beckhoff Automation catalog
MINNEAPOLIS, June 5, 2007 - Bringing EtherNet/IP users the flexibility of open IEC 6 1131-3 compliant software, Beckhoff Automation has announced full EtherNet/IP compatibility with TwinCAT. Via TwinCAT EtherNet/IP Slave (available in Windows XP and CE variants), one standard TwinCAT software package can communicate seamlessly with all devices from Beckhoff, which include Industrial PCs, Embedded PCs and PLCs as well as EtherNet/IP master devices from other vendors.
EtherNet/IP has been fully integrated into the TwinCAT programming environment, allowing for graphical linking of mapped data to PLC tasks. TwinCAT software acts as a low cost, yet intelligent gateway system by using integrated EtherNet/IP communication and PLC functionality. The award-winning Beckhoff BK9105 Bus Coupler provides a feature-laden I/O device to facilitate this communication.
"TwinCAT with EtherNet/IP compatibility gives machine builders and manufacturers the choice to use small, yet high speed processors offered via Beckhoff's PC-based controllers," said Corey McAtee, TwinCAT Product Manager, Beckhoff Automation. "The most advanced, globally competitive automation technologies are now within reach including high speed, deterministic control over EtherCAT. These can be easily integrated with a non-Beckhoff EtherNet/IP master device on the machine and share data without restriction. EtherNet/IP system designers can now take full advantage of Beckhoff technology without isolating machine modules already equipped with third party devices."
TwinCAT also supports all other major fieldbus networks including DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, SERCOS, CANopen, Ethernet TCP/IP and many others, providing one of the most flexible and open automation software packages in the world. This comprehensive fieldbus support allows the connection of an immense range of PLCs, PCs, servo drives, and other devices from Beckhoff and numerous other industrial device vendors.
TwinCAT software is purchased once with upgrades available free of charge from the Beckhoff web site. Users are not required to upgrade with fees every year as is the case with many control software providers. The most efficient and inexpensive software migration path is assured through the highly standardized software environment with industry-leading backwards and forwards device compatibility.
