Brocade Extends Storage Network Connectivity, Introduces Cost-Effective, High-Performance iSCSI Gateway

Entry-Level Servers Now Connect Quickly, Cost-Effectively to Storage Area Networks (SANs)

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 6 / -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (Brocade(R)) (NASDAQ:BRCD), today introduced the Brocade iSCSI Gateway, a feature-rich solution specifically designed for cost-effective storage consolidation and high-performance iSCSI links to enterprise Storage Area Networks (SANs). Designed to connect entry-level servers to shared storage networks, the Brocade iSCSI Gateway enables organizations to quickly and cost-effectively extend the benefits of enterprise SANs -- including improved backup, data replication, security, and storage asset utilization -- across a wider range of servers and applications.

The Brocade iSCSI Gateway addresses two concurrent trends in enterprise information systems. Enterprise SANs based on Fibre Channel standards have rapidly expanded to support mission-critical data storage and business applications in data centers. At the same time, many organizations need access to this shared storage across all server architectures and applications. By expanding SAN access via cost-effective iSCSI links to entry-level, IP-based servers, storage can be more efficiently managed, backed up and secured -- enabling storage management best practices.

With two Gigabit Ethernet and two Fibre Channel ports, the Brocade iSCSI Gateway serves as a bridge between high-performance SANs and IP-attached servers. A single unit can scale to support up to 100 servers, allowing simultaneous storage access to both attached hosts, and can also be used for direct attachment of iSCSI servers to midrange and high-performance storage arrays. The gateway is designed specifically for fast and easy connections to the SAN and host devices. Additionally, the Brocade iSCSI Gateway is the only solution of its kind designed to support an affordable high-availability connection to a SAN using a two-device cluster configuration.

"Extending the benefits of SAN technology from the corporate data center to departments and remote sites has been a challenge for IT managers," said Brian Garrett, an industry analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. "Brocade's new iSCSI connectivity solution meets that challenge head-on, providing organizations with the right tool to quickly and cost-effectively provide access to shared storage for remotely connected servers located throughput the enterprise."

The Brocade iSCSI Gateway is a 1U height device that is easily clustered to provide redundant, high-availability connectivity supporting Brocade Fabric OS(R), which is standard across all Brocade platforms. Native iSCSI drivers supported include Windows, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, Novell Netware, and Solaris.

The Brocade iSCSI Gateway is immediately available to Brocade OEM and Channel Partners.

"For over a decade, IT professionals have trusted mission-critical data to Brocade storage network infrastructure," said Tom Buiocchi, Brocade Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Support. "Now, we are expanding our portfolio in response to the requirement for extended consolidation and manageability across all classes of servers and applications."
