Blue Coat ProxyAV Web Antivirus Appliance Reaches 285 Mbps Throughput; Adds AhnLab to List of Best-of-Breed AV Engines

New Software Release for ProxyAV Further Extends Blue Coat's Lead in Speeding Anti-Virus Protection at the Enterprise Internet Gateway

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 13 / -- Blue Coat® Systems (NASDAQ:BCSI), the leader in secure content and application delivery, today announced a new software release of its award-winning ProxyAV Web antivirus gateway appliance, featuring throughput performance up to 285 Megabits per second (Mbps) and the addition of AhnLab to its selection of best-of-breed antivirus engines available to run on the ProxyAV appliance. In conjunction with the Blue Coat ProxySG appliance running SGOSv4.2, ProxyAV can also detect and block viruses inside SSL encrypted Webmail and downloads.

The performance enhancement extends Blue Coat's lead in performing Web anti-virus protection at the enterprise Internet gateway. When ProxyAV began shipping in 2004, independent testing showed ProxyAV to be more than 10 times faster than the next fastest anti-virus gateway solution in the industry. ProxyAV derives its performance capabilities from tight integration with Blue Coat's ProxySG appliance, enabling it to "scan once and serve many times," and thus eliminate redundant scanning of the same commonly accessed content, conserve valuable bandwidth and greatly reduce latency. For many enterprises, Blue Coat has made Web virus scanning at the gateway possible for the first time.

"Blue Coat's ProxyAV solution provides us with a layer of security previously unconsidered on our network," said David Jimenez, network administrator at White-Rodgers, a division of Emerson Electric Company. "The ability to proactively scan all Internet traffic at the gateway and prevent viruses, Trojans and spyware from entering our organization saves us time and money. Blue Coat ProxyAV's performance and protection offers us the best of both worlds."

ProxyAV also adds the virus scanning engine of AhnLab to a list of choices that includes Sophos, Panda, McAfee and Kaspersky, giving Blue Coat customers the choice between five best-of-breed AV engines to use as part of their Internet gateway antivirus defense. The South Korea-based AhnLab is well- known for its robust antivirus engine, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Used with ProxySG systems, the ProxyAV appliance gives organizations the scalable performance needed to quickly and effectively scan for viruses, worms, spyware and Trojans entering through Web-based backdoors such as personal Web email accounts, Web content or email spam and browser-based file downloads. ProxyAV v2.4, in conjunction with ProxySG v4.2, now provides the option to decrypt SSL traffic. As SSL use grows, hackers are increasingly attempting to cloak their attacks inside secure tunnels, making the ability to scan inside SSL crucial.

"Due to the real-time nature of Web communications, performance is critical for Web antivirus solutions," said Steve Mullaney, vice president of marketing for Blue Coat Systems. "ProxyAV continues to be the clear performance leader for Web AV, and the addition of AhnLab to its best-of-breed AV engine support offers customers a winning combination of performance and flexibility."

Pricing and Availability

The ProxyAV version 2.4 software is available today as an upgrade for existing customers. U.S. list price for the ProxyAV appliance starts at $5,995, with both per-seat and per-box licenses available for all AV engines.
