Schaevitz Sensors Introduces Industry's First Digital Gage Head

Hampton, VA, July 2003 - Schaevitz Sensors, a division of Measurement Specialties, Inc. (AMEX:MSS), has introduced the new GC-485 gage head. The GC-485 gage head is the sensor industry's first totally self-contained and packaged digital output gage head and is the second introduction in Schaevitz's new line of digital sensors.

The new GC-485 gage head is available in five bipolar measurement ranges, with standard strokes from ±. 050 in. to ±1.0 in. The unit's single-ended 8.5 to 30.0 volt DC input and two-wire, addressable RS-485 (ModBUS RTU in ASCII format) output make the GC-485 ideally suited to factory automation applications.

The new GC-485 features the well-known gage head attributes of repeatability, resolution, and non-contact ruggedness. The gage head's output, pre-scaled in engineering units, allows the new 485 Series of sensors to offer users previously unattainable levels of interchangeability as compared with analog gage heads, by removing previous industry concerns regarding cable length, calibration and recalibrations.

The GC-485 gage head stores Max, Min and TIR functions in memory, and can be delivered to the host on demand. A zero function enables the user to set the unit in either unipolar or bipolar modes as required.

Both units' sensor and electronics are packaged in a rugged, hermetically sealed stainless steel housing, suitable for use in the most demanding factory floor environments. Electrical hook-up is accomplished via a six-pin MS-style bayonet connector, welded to the lead side of the gage head, for ease of termination.

Mating connectors can be supplied upon request.

Set-up software will be supplied on a CD-ROM with every gage head. A free demo program is also provided on the CD or from the company's web site at www.msiusa.com/schaevitz.

Measurement Specialties (AMEX: MSS), designs, develops, produces, and sells electronic sensors and sensor-based consumer products. Consumer products include body-weight, kitchen, and postal scales, electronic tire pressure gauges, parking aids, and distance estimators. Industrial products include sensors for high volume, OEM applications. Measurement Specialties' products employ specialized application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), and diverse sensor technologies based on micromachining (the three-dimensional sculpting of silicon), MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems), force balance, strain gage, capacitive, inductive, piezoresisitive micromachined, and piezopolymer film, which provide accurate and efficient measurement, resolution and display of ranges of distance,
motion, fluidlevel, force, displacement, angle, or pressure.
