Unique Solution Provides Advanced Protection for Electronic Motor Controllers
NEWBURYPORT, Mass., November 18, 2003 - Ferraz Shawmut, a global leader in the field of circuit protection, today announced the addition of its new line of High-Speed Class J (HSJ) fuses to the company's comprehensive range of circuit protection solutions. The highly innovative new HSJ fuses have been engineered specifically for the operating characteristics of electronic motor controllers, featuring high-speed performance (low let-through energy, or I2t) and overload handling capabilities and qualifying as approved branch circuit protection devices under National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements. In one convenient Class J package, the UL 248-8 Listed HSJ fuse will provide advanced protection for electronic motor controllers by delivering both the branch circuit protection required by the NEC and the high-speed protection necessary to protect drives' and soft-starters' sensitive internal electronics.
The new HSJ fuse line fills a potential - and critical - gap in the high-speed protection provided for today's electronic motor controllers. While many electronic motor controllers include an internal high-speed semiconductor fuse to protect their solid-state components, others - medium- to low-power (200HP and below) drives and soft-starters, in particular - do not. Without a standard approach to protecting electronic motor controllers, many of these devices could be vulnerable to costly, but easily avoidable, failures.

Capable of clearing overloads down to 135% of their rating and offering a very low I2t, Ferraz Shawmut's HSJ fuses are easily coordinated with most drives and soft-starters and work seamlessly with existing Class J fuse blocks and holders. Further IP-20 grade "finger-safe" protection can be achieved by using the new HSJ fuses with Ferraz Shawmut's popular ULTRASAFE(TM) fuse holders. Available in ampere ratings from 15A to 600A, the HSJ fuses are rated 600VAC/500VDC, with a 200kA interrupting rating. Both ferrule and blade configurations are available.
