Fujitsu First Document Imaging Vendor to Be Certified on New Kofax Document Scan Server

Companies to Demonstrate New Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) Solution at the AIIM ON DEMAND Conference and Expo, May 16-18

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 16 / -- Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today announced it is the first document imaging vendor to be certified on Kofax's recently introduced Document Scan Server and will be giving demonstrations of the new scanning appliance at its booth, and other exhibitor vendor booths, at the AIIM ON DEMAND Conference and Expo, May 16-18, 2006, in Philadelphia, PA.

The Fujitsu fi-5120C and fi-5220C workgroup scanners were certified by Kofax to support the unveiling of the Document Scan Server, which allows organizations to add scanning capabilities to any enterprise business application without the need for additional software or disruption of their current business process. AIIM ON DEMAND conference attendees can receive hands-on demonstrations of the new platform in action at the following booths: Fujitsu (#600), Kofax (#925, M:310), IBM (#1534), Microsoft (#1001).

"The introduction of the Kofax Document Scan Server reduces many of the costs to integrate scanning functionality into any existing business application, including a centralized management tool for IT, and offering true, thin client scanning capabilities," said Tom Loeffler, director, business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "Most significantly, the new solution makes scanning a service that IT is comfortable using by leveraging Services Oriented Architecture (SOA). We are very excited to be working with Kofax to support their new and innovative offering."

Kofax Document Scan Server
The Document Scan Server was created to address the growing need for organizations to digitally capture documents at the point of entry into their business process. Previously, a solution of this kind required specialized software and drivers to be installed on each computer. This method commonly leads to increased administrative costs because IT staff must set up administrative rights, train workers on the new software application and perform timely remote updates and troubleshooting.

To combat these issues, the Document Scan Server offers the following three major features: A Software Development Kit (SDK), a simple appliance and a web-based Management Console. The Software Development Kit leverages Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) to allow a developer to integrate scanning into an existing or new application no matter the operating system or programming language. This services-based document integration provides a tighter integration of scanning to a core application. In addition, adding scanning capabilities to existing application is less disruptive to a users existing workflow and allows for a more efficient and effective business processes.

The Document Scan Server is an appliance that includes a USB port for scanner connectivity and an Ethernet port that connects the scanner to a network. Users only need to plug the scanner into the USB port in the Document Scan Server appliance and plug the Scan Server appliance into the LAN. Because this is a hardware-based approach to scanner connectivity, it is also more secure as administrator rights are not needed on the PC to install drivers or document capture applications. With Document Scan Server developers and integrators can now provide enterprises with a solution that can be deployed on a large scale basis and is in accordance with existing IT policies. The result is improved business processes and increased operational efficiency in the organization.

"With the integration of this completely unique solution, a company can now scan-enable any existing application without an increase in IT administrative costs or the need to add additional pieces of software to your CPU," says Anthony Macciola, vice president of product management at Kofax. "We are excited to bring this type of innovative technology to the market. We believe that ROI will be seen much faster as the Document Scan Server reduces deployment, support and training costs across the board with minimal disruption to the existing IT environment."
