Fujitsu Expands Its Mobile WiMAX Options with Infineon's Advanced WiMAX RF Transceiver

Both 3.5GHz and 2.5GHz now supported

Barcelona, Spain and Langen, Germany, 11th February 2008 - Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe's (FME) Mobile WiMAX customers now have the option to address the 3.5GHz-licensed band, in addition to the 2.5GHz band, with Infineon's new WiMAX RF Transceiver SMARTi(TM) WiMAX. This means that the vast majority of all licensed bands worldwide can be supported with one highly integrated and flexible front-end.

This latest option expands Fujitsu's original portfolio from the 2.5GHz-only solutions that are predominantly required in the USA, Taiwan and Japan, enabling coverage of all worldwide regions with a licensed WiMAX band.

"With its high performance, low power and full integration of 3.5GHz and 2.5GHz multiple-in and single-out paths, Infineon's SMARTi(TM) WiMAX transceiver matches our base-band interface perfectly," comments Manfred Mettendorff, Senior Marketing Manager, Communications Business Unit, FME. "It will allow our customers to develop highly integrated, wave2-compliant MiMo terminal solutions. We have established a fruitful collaboration with Infineon which will enable us to provide customers with strong competitive advantages when designing WiMAX terminals."

Customers can connect Infineon's PMB2008 development kit to Fujitsu's Mobile WiMAX system development kit. Fujitsu provides the drivers for Infineon's SMARTi(TM) WiMAX in addition to the standard software in the development kit.

"We are very happy that Fujitsu has chosen our Multi-Mode, energy-efficient WiMAX CMOS RF-Transceiver which supports both IEEE 802.16e WiMAX and IEEE 802.11b/g WLAN," said Stefan Wolff, Vice President, Communication Solutions Business Group and General Manager of the RF Engine Business Unit at Infineon. "Infineon has already gained extensive experience in the mobile market with our leading RF solutions for all cellular standards. Together with our partner Fujitsu we are able to offer a leading WiMAX system solution for applications beyond 3G."

Availability
Fujitsu's Mobile WiMAX system development kit, its MB86K21-SK1 and Infineon's WiMAX RF Transceiver SMARTi(TM) WiMAX are all available now. The combined solution will be available to customers by the end of Q208.
