Freescale and Sun Microsystems Drive Java® Technology Deeper into Embedded Markets

Joint effort produces implementation of Java(TM) Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) for Embedded optimized for Freescale's PowerQUICC III processors
TOKYO (Freescale Technology Forum Japan) - September 12, 2007 - Developers and systems designers may soon incorporate the functionality, security and portability of the Java(TM) SE platform into embedded systems powered by Freescale Semiconductor's popular line of PowerQUICC III processors.
Freescale and Sun are planning to create an implementation of Java SE for Embedded that is optimized to leverage the outstanding hardware acceleration, gigahertz performance, and ultra-low power capabilities of the PowerQUICC III processor family. Freescale, the world's top provider of communications processors, will demonstrate a preliminary version of the implementation running on its MPC8544 device at the Freescale Technology Forum taking place this week in Tokyo.
The planned implementation is designed for high performance embedded applications such as multi-function printers (MFPs), connected industrial and robotic systems, military avionics and medical imaging equipment - applications where PowerQUICC processors are prevalent. Availability of the implementation enhances Freescale's position in MFP markets, where optimal power-to-performance ratios are essential and seamless connectivity between printers and networks is mandatory.

These qualities, together with the ability to process Java SE for Embedded, make Freescale a compelling choice for advanced MFP designs."
Java SE for Embedded is a lightweight, high performance version of the Java platform customized for embedded applications. It offers embedded markets the portability and rich feature set that has made Java ubiquitous in desktops and servers. Java SE for Embedded provides specific features for the embedded market, including a small footprint Java Runtime Environment, headless configurations, memory optimizations and additional platform support.
PowerQUICC III processors from Freescale are based on Power Architecture technology and combine outstanding performance and low power operation with hardware acceleration, an onboard signal processing engine, high speed memory interface integration, and network security processing.

Enablement
PowerQUICC technology is supported by a broad ecosystem of third party hardware and software partners offering development tools and systems, as well as robust middleware and software stacks. For developers, this ecosystem means faster board bring-up, rapid application development and accurate performance benchmarking.
Availability
A fully certified version of Java SE Embedded optimized for the PowerQUICC III family is expected be available from Sun Microsystems in Q4, 2007.
