Zilog's First 1.8V Low Power, Flash MCU with Extended Peripherals Scores Big for Touch Screen and Motor Control Markets

o New F1680 Series Simplifies Design, Cuts BOM Costs, and Speeds Time-to-Market

o Solution of Choice for a Variety of Applications Including Capacitive and Resistive Sensing, Touch Screen Functionality, Backlit Control, Utility Metering, Gas and Fire Detection, Security Systems and Portable Medical and Instrumentation.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 10 / -- Zilog® (NASDAQ:ZILG) a leading provider of 8-, 16- and 32-bit embedded Flash microcontrollers, universal remote control and ARM® core-based solutions announced today its first 1.8V low power, 8-bit embedded flash microcontroller (MCU) with extended peripherals. Designated the Z8 Encore! XP® F1680 Series, the new single chip solution is based on Zilog's award-winning eZ8(TM) CPU core. By providing customers a rich set of analog and digital peripherals, multiple flash memory configurations up to 24KB and a low bill of materials (BOM) cost, the new F1680 Series offers Zilog customers the best cost/performance solution of any 8-bit mixed mode Flash MCU for a variety of applications, particularly capacitive and resistive sensing, touch screen functionality, gas and fire detection, security systems and portable medical and instrumentation.

The new F1680 low power Flash MCU delivers several key cost, performance and power saving benefits. The F1680 supports an extremely low 1.8V to 3.6V operating voltage, with very low ACTIVE, HALT and STOP mode currents that provide several other power savings options. The MCU features an 8-channel SAR ADC with a fast conversion time of 4.9ums, and an on-chip temperature sensor that enables designers to measure the temperature on the die to an accuracy of approximately ± 7 degrees C over a range of -40 degrees C to +105 degrees C or ± 1.5 degrees C accuracy over the range of 20 degrees C to 30 degrees C. The F1680 supports up to 24KB of flash memory, up to 2KB of register RAM and 1KB of program RAM. The F1680 is also loaded with up to four 16-bit reloadable timers that can be used for timing, event counting or generation of pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals. The F1680's 11MHz Internal Precision Oscillator (IPO) records an accuracy of ± 4 percent over temperature and voltage and is designed for use with external components. The MCU also features two comparators, a programmable LVD and an integrated intelligent peripheral set including SPI and I(2)C interfaces as well as two UARTs with support for LIN 2.0. Staying consistent with most of Zilog's embedded Flash solutions, the F1680 Series also comes with a single-pin, on-chip debugger (OCD) to provide design engineers with the greatest design flexibility.

"With its extended, intelligent peripheral set and power savings, the new F1680 Series adds even more design flexibility and choice to our award-winning Z8 Encore! XP® embedded Flash family of MCUs," noted Michelle Leyden Li, director of worldwide product marketing at Zilog. "The power-saving, cost-conscious, designer friendly attributes of the new F1680 Series allows us to deliver the best results for a variety of today's leading-edge applications. This is a big win for these customers."
