Spansion Announces First MirrorBit(R) HD-SIM(TM) Solution

Family of Flash Memory Solutions Enables Secure Distribution of Mobile Content, High Capacity Storage and Personal Data in SIM Cards

PARIS and SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 6 -- Spansion Inc. (NASDAQ:SPSN), the world's largest pure-play provider of Flash memory solutions, today announced its first secure MirrorBit(R) HD-SIM(TM) solution and that the company is actively working on select pilot projects with leading smart card manufacturers to begin by December.

The first secure HD-SIM solution is a two-chip solution that combines MirrorBit ORNAND(TM) technology at 90nm (nanometers) with msystems' high capacity SIM controller and TrueFFS(TM) (flash file system) technology. The Spansion(R) HD-SIM solution will provide 64 and 128 megabytes of storage and deliver advanced performance, reliability and an optimized cost structure for securely storing content, digital rights management and personal data in SIM cards. The two-chip solution, planned for production in December 2006, will enable easy migration to the upcoming single-chip solution, expected to be in production in Q2 2007.

SIM cards, which ship with all GSM phones, have not been previously used to store significant amounts of data. By adding non-volatile Flash memory to SIM cards, operators can now create new revenue opportunities and channels with the ability to create specialized content for certain user segments, bringing more storage capabilities to the SIM market and enhancing connectivity for over-the-air content downloads.

"SIM cards are a natural vault for security, holding many of the secrets of the mobile user -- personal information, address books, passwords and digital content," said Marc Bertin, chief strategy officer at Oberthur Card Systems. "New secure storage solutions for SIM cards will enable protected avenues for delivery of personalized content, allowing mobile subscribers to create their own media library -- and attract and retain loyal users."

The secure HD-SIM solution fits in a standard SIM card package and features a high-speed interface for fast transfers of media files. Spansion has a technology roadmap to support a range of high densities with innovative dual-chip and single-chip solutions.

"With the upcoming production of HD-SIM, we are demonstrating our system- level integration capabilities and ability to deliver added-value solutions to our customers," said Jean-Marc Julia, vice president of Spansion's Smart Card Business Unit. "SIM cards have always been the most secure personal storage location within the GSM network. Now with the ability to bring more storage capacity with Flash memory, Spansion is enabling SIM card manufacturers to enhance content distribution models and bring new revenue opportunities to the mobile industry."

Spansion and msystems announced development of an advanced, single-chip HD-SIM solution earlier this year, which will provide security, cost and process efficiencies to mobile operators and card vendors.

"msystems believes in strategic partnerships with leading companies, such as Spansion, to develop products that bring unique benefits to mobile network operators, application developers and subscribers. By combining the significant advantages of our security IP and controller architecture with Spansion's advanced MirrorBit technology, we bring to the market a smarter, more cost-effective dual and single chip design," said Simone Cavallo, general manager, Mobile Network Operators Business Unit, msystems.
