Arcwave Announces First Fixed Wireless Solution for Cable Operators to Deliver VOIP and Other Symmetric Services to SMBs

DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Plant Extension Product Opens the Door for MSOs to Deliver High-End IP Services to Hard to Reach Small to Medium Sized Business Market

Campbell, CA - September 20, 2004 - Arcwave, Inc., the leader in providing wireless solutions for the cable industry, today announced the availability of the first and only wireless plant extension product that enables cable operators to deliver symmetric upstream and downstream high-speed IP service to small to medium sized businesses (SMBs). The new DOCSIS 2.0 interoperability upgrade to Arcwave's ARCXtend fixed wireless product will facilitate the deployment of Voice Over IP (VoIP), video conferencing and other symmetric IP telecommunications services for SMBs at speeds up to 10 times faster than DSL.

ARCXtend is the first wireless last mile solution that allows MSOs to quickly and cost-effectively penetrate a large portion of the SMB high-speed data market that has been previously unreachable due to cost, regulatory or deployment delay considerations. Offering a convenient "plug and play" deployment, ARCXtend seamlessly integrates into a cable operator's network and operating infrastructure creating a wireless bridge for the transmission of the cable industry's DOCSIS standard signals between the wired network and one or more customer sites. It can instantly increase MSO "pass rates" to SMBs in a given market by up to 70 percent within two months, without significant network buildout or disruption of plant operations.

By adding DOCSIS 2.0 compatibility to ACRXtend, Arcwave can offer cable operators a solution that will place them on the vanguard of the delivery of new symmetric services in addition to opening new revenue opportunities. DOCSIS 2.0 enables the delivery of symmetric upstream and downstream bandwidth speeds by utilizing advanced physical layer (PHY) technologies to increase throughput in the upstream portion of the cable plant creating a network that has 30 Mbps capacity in two directions - triple that of the current version, DOCSIS 1.1. DOCSIS 2.0 also offers significantly enhanced noise immunity over DOCSIS 1.1.

ARCXtend enables cable operators to leverage their extensive fiber networks and advanced IP service capability to target the eight million plus domestic SMB market and garner a significant share of the $100B they spend annually on voice and data services. While an estimated 90 percent of the SMB market is within close proximity to existing cable networks, an estimated 50 percent of the SMB market is currently not serviceable by cable operators due to the delay, expense and regulatory restrictions involved with laying new fiber or coaxial cable. In particular, "right of way" and local zoning issues often prohibit the use of aerial and/or trenched drops in commercial markets.

In addition to the new DOCSIS 2.0 interoperability, Arcwave also supports legacy constant bit rate (CBR) telephony services currently deployed by cable operators throughout the U.S., making ARCXtend an ideal solution to meet the existing CBR and future VOIP cable telephony needs of the nation's leading cable operators.

"DOCSIS 2.0 enables the cable industry to deliver the most advanced high-speed IP services to its fixed line network customers," said Keith Grunberg, network sales engineer for Charter Communications. "With Arcwave's new incorporation of DOCSIS 2.0 interoperability to its ARCXtend product, cable operators can now extend the reach of these advanced services to the underserved small to medium sized business market, providing T-1 or better class of service at prices competitive with DSL."

"New technologies are driving convergence in the cable, telecommunications and high-speed Internet access markets that threatens to tear down previous barriers to competition in all of these areas," said Steve Goldberg, CEO of Arcwave. "As a part of this trend, the ARCXtend solution, which has helped cable operators enter markets that were previously out of reach, is now providing the first ever infrastructure that enables cable operators to offer an even broader array of services to the SMB market at speeds drastically faster than DSL. This new symmetric capability offers a strong opportunity for cable operators to provide new, high-value services, such as VoIP and video conferencing, and to leverage the new revenue opportunities that come with these services."

By setting a new benchmark in price, ARCXtend provides the lowest deployment price to performance ratio, enabling cable operators to deploy their high-speed data services to a wider market in a shorter period of time. In most cases, ROI can be achieved within 12 months.
