Original Press Release:

New Mikron High Speed 5-Axis Machine Provides Flexible, Economical Solution to Automated Production Demands

HOLLISTON, Mass., August 25, 2004 - Today Mikron introduced a new machining center, the UCP 600 Vario. The UCP 600 Vario is a high speed 5-axis system designed to handle a wide variety of machining configurations, including automated production applications. "Today versatile, automated production equipment plays an increasingly vital role for small and medium batch production," comments Mr. Mal Sudhakar, Vice President of Mikron. "The UCP 600 Vario has flexible, state-of-the-art features that can help manufacturers gain a significant advantage over their competitors."

The UCP 600 Vario delivers a number of efficiency-boosting features. The new, modular, scaleable tool changer system can hold 100 to 220 tools and fits optimally into the compact machine layout. Plus, the UCP 600 Vario provides economical, automated production with the cost-effective integration of a pallet changing system. Workpieces having a surface area of up to 13"x13", a height of 14" and a maximum weight of 176 lbs. can be automatically changed and simultaneously 5-axis machined using this inexpensive, 7-position pallet changer.

The Vario is available with three different high-speed spindle options (12,000, 20,000 and 42,000 RPM) and a highly versatile rotary/tilt table that swivels between -115° and +30° for the greatest milling flexibility. With a solid base of polymer concrete for the maximum degree of stability, the Vario system is very durable and has surprisingly large traverse capacity despite its compact base size.

The UCP 600 Vario is also equipped with Mikron's revolutionary "smart machine" technology, an intelligent new approach to high speed machining that is designed to improve process reliability, optimize machining performance and allow reliable, unmanned operation. With smart machine sensors, machinists can utilize leading-edge capabilities such as an advanced process system (APS) for monitoring and recording spindle vibrations; an intelligent thermal control (ITC) system to automatically compensate for thermal deviations; and a remote notification system (RNS), allowing real-time control / access at any location for reliable, unattended machining.

The machine also comes equipped with a state-of-the art chip management system. The unit's edge filter clearly separates coolant from chips while the 16mm wide chip conveyor takes care of chip disposal. The chip disposal unit is fitted with overflow protection and the system also automatically manages chip jams.

Mikron is a subsidiary of the Agie Charmilles Group, the world's leading system provider to the tool and moldmaking industry. The company provides sales, service, parts and technical support of Mikron high speed, high performance machining centers. Mikron has the industry's widest range of high speed machines, with travel ranges from 15 through 54 inches and spindle speeds up to 60,000 rpm. Machines are available in a wide array of three-, four- and five-axis configurations for die/mold, job shop, aerospace, medical, electronic and other high precision applications. The company maintains fully equipped, state-of-the-art technology centers in Holliston, MA., and Lincolnshire, IL., for applications engineering, customer training and product demonstrations.
