Eastman Introduces Synthebond Finishing Chemicals for Nonwovens

Kingsport, Tenn. (April 27, 2004) - Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE:EMN) introduces Synthebond finishing chemicals for a range of performance automotive, medical, wipes, filtration, apparel and home furnishing nonwoven applications. Eastman's new portfolio of high-performance polymers, resins, finishes, and fluorochemical extenders are engineered to deliver improved hand and color fastness, abrasion resistance, oil and water repellency, and increased strength and rigidity for nonwoven applications.

"Eastman has been a key player in the woven textile industry for over 40 years," said Wayne Steinberg, Textile Chemicals Global Business Manager, Eastman. "Our team of seasoned professionals has developed Synthebond technologies to help nonwoven producers optimize the performance of products such as window coverings, medical gowns, consumer wipes, and filtration systems," said Steinberg.

The new Synthebond nonwoven product line features a range of binders, performance finishes, softeners and soil release agents which includes the following key technology groups:

o Synthebond AC Emulsion Polymers-a series of conventional acrylic, vinyl/acrylic and styrene/acrylic emulsion polymers with glass transition temperatures ranging from -45C to +40C. This product line is composed of both self-crosslinking and non-crosslinking polymers for use in durable and disposable nonwovens for improved hand building properties, color fastness, and increased strength and durability.

o Synthebond SP Polyester Resins-water dispersible polyester resins designed to impart strength, rigidity and moldability to nonwoven fabrics. They have outstanding adhesion to polyester substrates and can be added to self-crosslinking acrylics to improve tensile strength and elongation.

o Synthebond HB Hybrid Emulsion Polymers-a combination of polyester resins and acrylic technologies that offer improved abrasion resistance, adhesion and water resistance properties to nonwoven substrates.

o Synthebond SF Specialty Finishes-comprised of hydrophilic polyester, hydrophilic silicone and amino functional silicone elastomer technologies are designed to impart softness, lubricity and improve abrasion properties of nonwoven fabrics.

o Synthebond FX Fluorochemical Extenders-a line of acrylic emulsion polymers that impart durability and repellency extension when combined with fluorochemical emulsions. These products vary in glass transition temperature and ionic nature to offer selection in hand effect and compatibility.
