Fiber-Optic Transceiver transmits up to 40 kilometers.

Press Release Summary:

Extended-reach version of MuxLink(TM) 1300 nm CWDM transceiver, Model ELX4, transmits up to 40 km over standard single-mode fiber at rate of 10 Gbps. Modules dissipate only 4.5 W. Multiple Protocol (MP) version operates over any protocol from 1.0 to 3.2 Gbps per lane, and dissipates half the power of current 1300 LR and LX4 modules. Complete transceiver consumes only 2.5 W.

MuxLink(TM) Transceivers from Molex Go the Distance

Molex Introduces 40km Reach and Multiple Protocol Versions of LX4 Transceiver at ECOC and NFOEC.

Molex Fiber Optics, a division of Molex Incorporated (NASDAQ: MOLX and MOLXA), announces two additions to its MuxLink(TM) 1300nm CWDM product family. An extended reach version (ELX4) is now available, designed to transmit up to 40km over standard singlemode fiber. A multiple protocol version (MP) is also being introduced, which operates over any protocol from 1.0 to 3.2 Gbps per lane and dissipates half the power of current 1300 LR and LX4 modules. Both modules are in the XENPAK form factor. These products will be on display at the following trade shows: ECOC (Copenhagen, Denmark) September 9 -11, 2002, Booth 21A and NFOEC (Dallas, TX)September 16-18, 2002, Booth 4024.

MuxLink-ELX4
Utilizing the latest techniques in CWDM multiplexing and electro/optical integration, Molex is able to extend the IEEE 802.3ae distance objective of the LX4 physical media dependent sub-layer (PMD) modules beyond the 10km standard to 40km. By extending distance over standard singlemode fiber, the need for installing dispersion-shifted fiber is eliminated.

"Momentum is building in the marketplace for the LX4 module to transfer data at 10 Gigabits per second. Now with our ability to transmit 40km distances, the MuxLink module family is truly a one-stop shop for all 10 Gigabit transmission needs in the
network. Molex modules use 1300nm uncooled DFB lasers, saving users the unnecessary high cost and high power dissipation of cooled externally modulated DFB lasers used in serial 1550nm extended reach transponders that were previously required to
reach 40km," explains Steve Skiest, Marketing Manager for Optoelectronics at Molex. "Since our modules dissipate only 4.5W, which is nearly half of what is required for standard extend reach 40km transponders, the user can fully populate an 8 across switch board without running into thermal issues."

"Molex's capability to get 40km of 10Gbps transmission at 1300nm is impressive", says Greg Cinque, Vice President of Engineering at Manticom Networks. "It allows us to implement a cost effective 40km link as well as flexibility in system configuration with interoperable 10 and 40km links".

MuxLink-MP
The MuxLink-MP module, which can be used at various data rates from 1.0 to 3.2 Gbps per lane, is the second version being introduced. This module offers the user much lower power consumption than the previous version. The complete transceiver consumes only 2.5W compared to 4.5W for current LX4 or LR XENPAK module implementations. It is ideal for applications where the Media Access Controller (MAC) integrated circuit is located a reasonable distance from the XENPAK module.

An additional feature of the MuxLink-MP transceiver is that it is data rate independent so it can be used for a number of data protocols that operate from 1.0 to 3.2 Gbps per channel including 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Fibre Channel, OC-192, and other proprietary 4-lane applications. It extends the application base for 10 Gigabit XENPAK transceivers beyond the current 10Gigabit Ethernet Switch segment.

Molex plans to start shipments of the extended reach and multiple protocol versions of MuxLink transceivers in the fourth quarter of 2002.
